Shape a Safer Future in Education
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Head of Health & Safety to lead and develop our health, safety and wellbeing strategy across the College.
This is an exciting opportunity for a health and safety professional with experience in a Further Education, Higher Education, public sector, or similarly complex multi-site environment to make a significant impact on the safety, wellbeing and compliance culture of our organisation.
Reporting to the Director of Estates and Facilities (or relevant senior leader), you will provide strategic leadership and expert advice to senior managers, governors and staff, ensuring the College meets all statutory health and safety obligations while fostering a positive culture of continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of the College's Health & Safety Strategy.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Act as the College's competent health and safety adviser.
- Develop, review and monitor health and safety policies, procedures and risk management frameworks.
- Lead accident and incident investigations, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Manage internal audits, inspections and compliance monitoring programmes.
- Advise on specialist areas including educational workshops, laboratories, construction facilities, sports provision and student activities.
- Deliver health and safety training programmes for staff and managers.
- Prepare reports and performance data for Senior Leadership Team and Governors.
- Work collaboratively with trade unions, managers and stakeholders to promote a strong safety culture.
About You
We are looking for a confident and influential leader who can engage effectively with staff at all levels and drive continuous improvement.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in a senior health and safety leadership role.
- Chartered or Graduate Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH or GradIOSH working towards Chartered status).
- NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent Level 6 qualification).
- Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and best practice.
- Experience of leading audits, inspections, investigations and compliance programmes.
- Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience developing organisational safety culture and wellbeing initiatives.
Desirable Requirements
- Previous experience within a Further Education College.
- Experience within education, local government, healthcare, universities or other complex public-sector organisations.
- Qualification in fire safety, risk management or environmental management.
- Experience managing health, safety and wellbeing teams.
