About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable Functional Skills Cover Tutor to join a prison education team at HMP Thameside. In this role, you will deliver high-quality teaching to small groups of learners, helping them develop essential English, maths, and employability skills. As a cover tutor, you will provide flexible support across the curriculum, ensuring continuity of learning and maintaining high standards of delivery. You will play a key part in helping learners build confidence, achieve qualifications, and work toward positive long-term goals. Education within prisons is a powerful tool for rehabilitation and reducing reoffending. You will work with adult learners who may have experienced barriers to education but are keen to improve their prospects. Learning environments are structured, supportive, and focused on enabling individuals to gain the skills they need for employment and successful reintegration into society.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging Functional Skills sessions to small groups of learners
- Provide effective cover across subjects as required
- Develop and follow individual learning plans

What We're Looking For
- Minimum Level 4 Teaching Qualification (essential) (e.g. Certificate in Education, CTLLS, DET or equivalent)
- Level 3 qualification in English (or equivalent)
- Strong subject expertise and relevant experience
- Experience delivering teaching or training
- Ability to engage learners using a variety of teaching approaches
- Strong communication and organisational skills
