The Opportunity

Are you an English or Maths Tutor who wants more than just another classroom? This is a rare and rewarding opportunity to use your teaching skills where they have a genuine, life-changing impact. Working within a prison education environment, you'll support learners to gain essential qualifications, rebuild confidence, and take meaningful steps towards employment and a positive future.

The Role

You'll be delivering City & Guilds Functional Skills in Maths or English from Entry Level 1 to Level 2, working with small groups of motivated learners (typically up to 12 per class). This isn't a one-size-fits-all teaching role - you'll be working with individuals from diverse educational backgrounds, many of whom are rediscovering learning for the first time in years. Your role will include:

  • Delivering engaging Functional Skills lessons (Entry 1 - Level 2)
  • Conducting initial assessments and using BKSB diagnostics to identify starting points
  • Creating and maintaining Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
  • Planning creative, impactful lessons that drive progression
  • Supporting learners with additional needs and reasonable adjustments
  • Monitoring learner progress and preparing them for exams
  • Embedding literacy, numeracy, and reading for enjoyment into your teaching
  • Collaborating with prison staff and wider support teams to maximise outcomes

What We're Looking For

We're keen to speak with passionate, resilient educators who believe in second chances and the power of education.

Essential:

  • Level 3 qualification in Maths and English
  • A recognised teaching qualification (Level 5+ such as PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS) or willingness to work towards
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths or English
  • Strong classroom management and lesson planning skills
  • Ability to engage and motivate diverse learners
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and learner success

Desirable:

  • Experience in prison education, adult learning or FE
  • Familiarity with BKSB or similar tools
  • Understanding of Ofsted EIF
  • IQA qualification (or willingness to work towards)

Why This Role Stands Out

This isn't just education - it's rehabilitation through learning. You’ll be part of a wider mission focused on:

  • Supporting individuals to gain skills for employment
  • Tackling the root causes of offending behaviour
  • Building confidence, self-worth and future aspirations
  • Creating pathways into sustainable careers

Prison education plays a vital role in reducing re-offending by equipping learners with practical skills, qualifications, and a renewed sense of purpose - and you'll be right at the heart of that journey.

What's In It For You?

  • A highly rewarding teaching environment where no two days are the same
  • Small class sizes and the ability to truly impact individuals
  • Ongoing professional development and career progression
  • The chance to be part of a supportive, mission-driven team
  • A role where your work genuinely changes lives
