SEND Teacher – SEMH Specialist

North Wakefield

To Scale

Full-time, perm Opportunity

Behaviour Is Communication. You Already Know That. Some pupils don’t need louder instructions. They need consistency. Patience. Someone who can stay calm when the classroom feels anything but. That’s where you come in.

Protocol Education are looking for a resilient and compassionate SEND Teacher to join a specialist SEMH setting close to Wakefield City centre. This role is ideal for someone who understands the challenges young people can face around emotional regulation, trust, and engagement, and knows how to build relationships that genuinely change lives. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress, connection, and creating a classroom where pupils feel safe enough to learn again.

The Role

  • You’ll work with pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, many of whom may also have secondary diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, and perhaps trauma-related needs, or experience barriers to mainstream education.
  • Your role will include:
    • Planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to individual needs
    • Supporting pupils with SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and additional complex needs
    • Building positive, consistent relationships that help pupils feel safe and understood
    • Managing challenging behaviour using calm, trauma-informed approaches
    • Working closely with Teaching Assistants, pastoral teams, therapists, and SENCOs
    • Creating a structured, nurturing environment where pupils can re-engage with learning

Why This Role?

Because the right environment changes everything. You’ll be joining a setting where staff genuinely understand SEMH and support each other through the tough days as well as the brilliant ones.

You’ll Thrive In This Role If You…

  • Stay calm under pressure and adapt quickly when situations change
  • Build trust naturally with pupils who may struggle to engage
  • Understand that every behaviour has a reason behind it
  • Can balance firm boundaries with empathy and patience
  • Want to make a genuine difference, not just deliver lessons

Requirements

  • To apply, you’ll need:
    • QTS with some teaching experience within SEND or SEMH
    • Experience supporting children or young people with additional needs
    • Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills
    • A resilient, patient, and compassionate approach
    • Already Thrive trained? Amazing, schools love it.
    • Not yet? No problem. We offer FREE Thrive training to help you better support pupils’ emotional development and strengthen your opportunities within SEMH and SEND settings.
