Are you confident using Makaton and passionate about helping children communicate, engage, and thrive? Protocol Education is currently recruiting a caring and enthusiastic Makaton Teaching Assistant to support pupils with SEND in a specialist educational setting in Sunderland. This role is ideal for someone who understands the importance of communication beyond words and can help create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for children with additional needs.
The Role
- Support pupils with Autism (ASC), Speech & Language needs, and complex communication difficulties
- Use Makaton daily to support understanding, routines, and emotional expression
- Work closely with teachers, therapists, and wider SEND professionals
- Provide 1:1 and small group intervention support
- Encourage independence, confidence, and positive social interaction
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Experience using Makaton in education, care, or support settings
- Previous experience working with children or young people with SEND
- A calm, patient, and nurturing approach
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- A genuine passion for helping young people succeed
