The Role

As a Behavioural Support Assistant, you will work closely with students who have social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties in a SEND school environment. You will be responsible for supporting students on a one‑to‑one basis or in small groups, helping them manage their behaviour, engage in their learning, and develop key life skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support students with complex behavioural needs to engage with their education and personal development.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies in line with individual support plans.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, helping them develop social and emotional skills.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of individualised learning activities.
  • Work closely with teaching staff, SENCOs, and other professionals to ensure that students’ needs are met.
  • Promote a safe and nurturing environment by helping students manage their behaviour in a constructive way.
  • Encourage students to participate in classroom activities and support their emotional well‑being.
  • Provide feedback on student progress and contribute to the review of behaviour management plans.
  • Attend training sessions to continuously develop your skills in SEND and behaviour management.

Key Requirements

  • Experience in a behaviour support role, ideally within an education or care setting (experience in SEND is desirable but not essential).
  • Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and an understanding of how to support students with complex behavioural needs.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with students who may have challenging behaviours.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A proactive approach to problem‑solving and ability to think on your feet.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team in a supportive, inclusive environment.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, health, or social care (e.g., Teaching Assistant qualification, NVQ, or equivalent) are advantageous but not essential.
