Protocol Education are currently working in partnership with a specialist SEND school in the Sunderland area that is seeking a passionate and dedicated SEN Teacher to join their experienced team. This specialist setting supports pupils aged 4–19 with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), many of whom have a primary diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) alongside moderate learning difficulties, communication needs and sensory processing differences. The school prides itself on creating a calm, structured and nurturing environment where pupils are supported to learn, grow and develop independence at their own pace. Class sizes are intentionally small to allow for highly personalised learning, and teachers work alongside a team of experienced Teaching Assistants, therapists and pastoral staff to provide a holistic approach to education and wellbeing. The school follows a creative and adapted curriculum designed to support both academic development and essential life skills, helping pupils build confidence, communication skills and social understanding.

The Role

As an SEN Teacher, you will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging lessons that are adapted to the individual needs of pupils within your class. You will play a key role in helping pupils develop academically while also supporting their emotional wellbeing, independence and communication skills. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering differentiated lessons tailored to EHCP outcomes
  • Creating a structured, predictable and supportive classroom environment
  • Supporting pupils with communication and social interaction
  • Implementing strategies that support sensory regulation and emotional wellbeing
  • Working closely with Teaching Assistants and specialist staff to provide consistent support
  • Monitoring pupil progress and adapting teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs
  • Contributing to EHCP reviews, progress tracking and personalised learning plans

The Ideal Candidate

The school is looking for a teacher who is compassionate, adaptable and committed to inclusive education. Experience working with pupils with autism or additional learning needs is highly desirable, although teachers with a strong interest in developing their career within SEND are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification. Candidates should ideally hold a DBS registered on the Update Service. If you do not currently have one, you will be required to apply for a DBS through Protocol Education as part of the recruitment process.
