Thinking about becoming a teacher… but not quite ready to dive straight in? If you want real classroom experience before committing to teacher training, this could be your perfect first step. We’re working with a welcoming secondary school in Northumberland, just outside Newcastle, looking for graduates to join as Cover Supervisors on a flexible, ad hoc basis. It’s a great way to get a feel for school life, build your confidence, and see if teaching is the right path, without the full pressure of leading your own class (just yet). Even better, you won’t be thrown in at the deep end. You’ll spend a day shadowing an experienced Cover Supervisor first, so you can see how it all works before stepping up yourself.

What you’ll be doing

  • Think of yourself as the calm, confident presence in the room when a teacher’s away.
  • Delivering pre-set lessons across a range of subjects.
  • Keeping students focused and engaged.
  • Managing behaviour and setting the tone.
  • Supporting pupils with the work left by their teacher.

No planning. No marking. Just strong communication, organisation, and a bit of confidence.

Why this is perfect for graduates

If you’re considering teacher training, educational psychology, youth work, or anything involving young people, this role gives you the kind of hands-on experience universities love to see. You’ll:

  • Build real classroom confidence.
  • Learn behaviour management skills that actually stick.
  • Experience day-to-day life in a secondary school.
  • Figure out if teaching is your thing, before committing.

We’re looking for people who

  • Have a degree in any subject.
  • Feel comfortable leading a room.
  • Can build positive relationships with young people.
  • Stay calm, organised, and adaptable when things get busy.

Why Protocol Education?

  • Flexible work that fits around you.
  • Weekly PAYE pay, no umbrella faff.
  • Free access to our CPD Academy.
  • A friendly, local consultant who actually gets it.
  • Opportunities to move into long-term roles or teacher training.

Extra bonus

Are you Thrive trained? Schools love educators who understand emotional wellbeing. If you’re not, no worries, we’ll help you access our free Thrive training to boost your confidence and your CV.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
