Purpose of Role
To provide targeted, personalised support for a pupil with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), enabling them to access the curriculum, develop self-regulation skills, improve concentration, and make progress academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

  • 1:1 Pupil Support (ADHD-Focused)
    • Implement strategies to help the pupil maintain focus, reduce distractions, and manage impulsivity.
    • Break tasks into manageable steps and provide regular check-ins to support task completion.
    • Use visual timetables, prompts, timers, and structured routines to aid organisation and time management.
    • Support the pupil in developing self-regulation, resilience, and coping strategies for attention and behaviour challenges.
    • Encourage movement breaks and sensory strategies when appropriate.
    • Help the pupil recognise triggers and develop personalised strategies to avoid escalation.
  • Classroom & Learning Support
    • Work with subject teachers to adapt instructions, pacing, and work expectations to support ADHD needs.
    • Pre-teach key vocabulary or concepts to support understanding.
    • Reinforce clear routines, transitions, and expectations consistently.
    • Provide discreet support to keep the pupil on task without drawing attention.
    • Encourage active participation and positive engagement in lessons.
    • Help manage materials, equipment, and homework to support organisation.
  • Progress Monitoring & Communication
    • Track progress in focus, behaviour regulation, organisation, and academic engagement.
    • Record observations on attention patterns, triggers, and effective strategies.
    • Work closely with the SENCO to review and adapt support strategies regularly.
    • Contribute to EHCP review meetings and multi-agency input where required.
    • Communicate regularly with parents/carers to ensure consistent strategies across school and home.
  • Safeguarding, Wellbeing & Inclusion
    • Promote emotional wellbeing and support positive self-image, particularly around confidence and motivation.
    • Use calm, consistent language and de-escalation techniques when needed.
    • Encourage positive peer interactions and social skills.
    • Follow safeguarding policies at all times and report concerns promptly.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience supporting pupils with ADHD or similar attention/behaviour needs.
  • Strong understanding of ADHD and how it impacts learning, organisation, and behaviour.
  • Skilled in using ADHD-specific strategies such as chunking tasks, movement breaks, and multimodal instruction.
  • Ability to anticipate challenges and provide proactive support.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Personal Qualities

  • Patient, calm, and consistent.
  • Highly organised, proactive, and able to manage changing needs.
  • Positive, encouraging, and able to motivate pupils with low confidence or high frustration levels.
  • Flexible and creative in adapting approaches.
