The Health & Safety and Compliance Training Manager plays a pivotal role in promoting and maintaining a safe, legally compliant, and competency-driven workplace. This role is responsible for leading the development, delivery, and oversight of health and safety programs, ensuring full alignment with HSE legislation, BRC Global Standards, and internal operational policies. A key focus is embedding a culture of safety through robust risk management practices, continuous training, and effective compliance monitoring across the organization.

Key Accountabilities

  • Champion a proactive safety culture, ensuring consistent adherence to health and safety legislation, company policies, and best practices.
  • Lead on the development and execution of site-specific safety programs, campaigns, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Act as the central point of contact for HSE-related queries, audits, inspections, and incident investigations.
  • Conduct regular reviews of site-wide risk assessments in partnership with relevant departments.
  • Ensure risk control measures are clearly communicated, implemented, and reinforced through training and supervision.
  • Support accident and near-miss investigations and lead root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Design, implement, and manage a structured health and safety training program to ensure all employees (including agency staff) are competent and compliant.
  • Maintain a dynamic training matrix that aligns with legal, regulatory and operational needs.
  • Coordinate refresher training, toolbox talks, and emergency response exercises in line with identified risks.
  • Oversee comprehensive health and safety induction for all new employees and contractors.
  • Ensure all new starters complete essential compliance training, including site rules, PPE, fire safety, allergens, hygiene, and manual handling.
  • Facilitate the creation and review of Standard Operating Procedures with input from Subject Matter Experts.
  • Ensure all SOPs and safety documents are current, controlled, and accessible in accordance with BRC and HSE standards.
  • Monitor and report on training compliance, health and safety performance metrics and audit readiness.
  • Provide weekly dashboards detailing training completion rates, incident trends, and risk area improvements by site, shift, and department.

Skills/Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in a Health & Safety leadership role, ideally within a manufacturing, logistics, or food production environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK HSE legislation, risk assessment methodology, accident investigation, and control measures.
  • Experience managing training systems and ensuring operational compliance with BRC Global Standards or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to influence and engage employees at all levels.
  • Proficient in reporting tools, compliance dashboards, and training management systems.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely, or equivalent are essential.
  • Qualification or experience in Learning & Development, particularly around competency-based training, is a strong advantage.
