Protecnium is an international consulting firm specializing in engineering and technical services (www.protecnium.com/en). We are looking for a TBM Shift Manager to join our team for a tunnel construction project in the South of London (100% onsite).
Project: Tunnel construction project. Estimated Duration: 12-month contract. At the end of the project we try to relocate the employee to other projects to ensure continuity.
Summary
The TBM Shift Manager is responsible for supervising and coordinating all activities related to the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during their assigned shift. This role ensures that tunnelling operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and production targets. The TBM Shift Manager leads the shift engineering team and TBM personnel, provides technical support, oversees mechanical and operational performance, and ensures all shift documentation is completed accurately. The role requires strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure. Close coordination with the Construction Manager, TBM Manager, and other site supervisors is essential to maintain consistent progress across shifts.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, lead, and coordinate all TBM activities during the assigned shift.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, operational procedures, and quality requirements.
- Monitor TBM performance, excavation parameters, ring installation, and production rates.
- Provide technical guidance to Shift Engineers and on-shift personnel.
- Identify issues affecting TBM operation and support troubleshooting efforts.
- Complete shift reports, daily logs, and communicate progress to the management team.
- Coordinate handovers between day and night shifts to ensure operational continuity.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure all shift staff follow safety protocols.
Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years experience working as a TBM shift manager in tunnel projects or similar projects.
- Previous experience as a TBM Shift Engineer is required.
- Solid understanding of TBM operation, tunnelling processes, and related equipment.
- Proven leadership and team management skills in a tunnelling environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work under rotating shift schedules (7/3/7/4).
- Ability to respond quickly to operational challenges and make sound decisions.
Working Hours
7/3–7/4 shifts. 12-hour shifts with rotations: day shifts (8 am–6 pm) and night shifts (8 pm–6 am).
