A long-established firm of chartered accountants in Eastbourne, with a loyal and varied client base built up over many years. The team is small, friendly and office-based. It is the sort of practice where people tend to stay, because they like the work and the people they do it with.
The role involves taking on the day-to-day running of the payroll bureau, supported by a payroll manager who reviews your work. There is real ownership here, but you are never thrown in on your own. It can be shaped two ways: as a part-time role of around 25 hours a week, purely payroll, or as a full-time role that blends payroll with bookkeeping and wider accounts, roughly two-thirds payroll and one-third everything else. Some weeks, around month end, are all payroll, while others lean more towards the books. The bureau runs on BrightPay, with around 200 clients on weekly and monthly cycles. The bookkeeping side is on Xero.
Day to day (payroll):
- Running weekly and monthly payrolls
- Handling client payroll queries
- Pension submissions and payroll compliance
- Year-end procedures and submissions
- PAYE reconciliations
- CIS returns (training available)
- Payroll records and admin
- P11Ds and payrolling of benefits (training available)
Who this will suit:
- Around 2 years of payroll processing experience, ideally
- Accurate, organised and happy managing your own workload
- Good with clients and confident communicating
- Comfortable working independently
- Solid with Microsoft Office
- BrightPay is a bonus rather than essential, and Xero helps for the full-time version
What is on offer:
- Genuine flexibility, part-time payroll-only or full-time payroll plus bookkeeping
- Flexible start and finish times (office-based, but there is room to agree your hours)
- A salary that flexes for the right experience
- A small, supportive team, with your work reviewed by a payroll manager
- A varied client base and an established local practice
- Training on CIS and P11Ds
- A genuine route into bookkeeping and wider accounts on the full-time path
- 20 days holiday plus bank holidays, with extra days for long service
