Overview

Prospero Teaching is looking for a passionate, proactive and enthusiastic Learning Mentor to support the learning of pupils with SEMH in one of our inspirational Alternative Provisions in South Shields to start in September 2026 on a Temporary to Permanent basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to build positive relationships with pupils and have a long-term, positive impact on their lives, progress and development.

About the School

  • The role is based in an inspirational Alternative Provision in South Shields.
  • The School supports pupils aged 11‑18 with varying levels of SEMH and SEND who have been temporarily excluded from mainstream schools.
  • The School has an outstanding supportive culture and Leadership Team, where staff work as a team within classrooms to provide high standards of support to pupils.

Pay, Hours and Contract

  • Hours – 08:30‑15:30, Monday to Friday
  • Contract – Full‑time until the end of the Academic Year in July 2027 (Temp‑to‑Perm Contract)
  • Start Date – September 2026
  • Location – South Shields

About the Role

  • Providing one‑to‑one and small group support to individuals with SEMH needs, helping them manage their emotions and behaviour in lessons and around school.
  • Working with pupils aged 11‑16 who have been excluded from mainstream schools and require extra support with learning and engagement.
  • Developing an understanding of the different needs and learning styles of pupils and working closely with class teachers and colleagues to establish this.

Experience, Qualifications and Requirements

  • A supporting teaching and learning or childcare‑based qualification (desired)
  • Experience of working with children in schools in the UK
  • Ability to build positive relationships and rapport with pupils and staff
  • Resilient, proactive, and positive nature
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or willingness to apply for one
  • Provide two professional references covering the last two years
