1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant
Prospero Teaching is working with a secondary school in the Gosport area to recruit a compassionate and resilient 1:1 Learning Support Assistant to support a Year 8 pupil with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs.
This is a highly rewarding role focused on supporting a student who can be disengaged from education and requires a positive role model to help rebuild confidence, improve engagement, and develop a more positive relationship with school. The successful candidate will play a key part in helping the pupil access learning and achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally.
The school is looking for someone who can build trust, form strong relationships, and motivate young people who may be experiencing barriers to education.
The Role
- Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Year 8 pupil with SEMH needs
- Support engagement, attendance, and participation in learning
- Build a positive and trusting relationship with the student
- Provide encouragement, structure, and motivation throughout the school day
- Support the pupil academically within lessons and during interventions
- Work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and SEN professionals
- Implement strategies to support emotional regulation and resilience
- Monitor progress and provide feedback to relevant staff
- Promote a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment
- Follow safeguarding and school policies consistently
Ideal Candidate
- Experience working with young people, ideally within education, care, youth work, mentoring, coaching, or support work
- Strong relationship‑building and communication skills
- Patient, resilient, and empathetic approach
- Confident supporting pupils with SEMH or behavioural needs
- Able to motivate and encourage disengaged learners
- Calm under pressure and able to de‑escalate challenging situations
- Passionate about making a positive difference to a young person's education and wellbeing
Contract Details
Position: 1:1 Learning Support Assistant (SEMH Support)
Location: Gosport
Start Date: ASAP
Working Pattern: Part‑time (3 days per week)
Pay Rate: £14.25 - £15.66 per hour
Key Stage: KS3 (Year 8)
Experience, Training & Safeguarding
- Experience working with young people essential
- SEMH, behaviour support, mentoring, or pastoral experience highly beneficial
- Safeguarding training can be provided
- Enhanced DBS required (or willingness to obtain one)
