Functional Skills Tutor - English and Maths

At Prospero Teaching, we work in partnership with Local Councils, schools, and SEND teams across the UK to support young people who are unable to access full-time education.

Our goal is to match students with dedicated tutors who can deliver personalised one-to-one or small group sessions, helping each learner reach their full potential through tailored educational support.

We take pride in building a community of passionate and committed tutors who are driven to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people by delivering high-quality, individualised education.

We are currently experiencing a high demand for Functional Skills Tutors in Hexham to support students in Maths and English.

These learners are not currently accessing full-time education due to permanent or temporary exclusion and require additional support to re-engage with learning.

This role is ideal for tutors who are patient, adaptable, and committed to creating a positive learning environment.

You will work closely with students to build their confidence, overcome barriers to education, and help them achieve their academic goals through tailored, engaging sessions.

Position Details

  • Pay rate up to £30 per hour depending on qualification and/or experience
  • Up to 15 hours per week per student
  • Start date: September 2025
  • Location: Hexham
  • Duration: ongoing
  • Access to our Resource Hub, which includes learning materials
  • Access to CPD accredited courses and training

The Position

  • Deliver one-to-one tuition in Functional Skills Maths and/or English
  • Develop and implement personalised lesson plans that address individual learning gaps.
  • Monitor student progress and provide regular, constructive feedback to students and their families.
  • Create a supportive and motivating learning environment to help students re-build their confidence in learning.
  • Complete daily attendance and weekly reports.
  • To be eligible for this role, the potential Functional Skills Tutors must:
  • Previous experience with functional skills, specifically English and Maths.
  • Available to Travel to Hexham, Northumberland, on a regular basis.
  • Hold the right to work in the UK
  • Hold an enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application
  • Be able to reference the last two years of education/employment
