Behaviour Intervention Teaching Assistant

Specialist SEMH School - Preston - Up to 600 per week - Full-Time - September Start

Are you confident supporting young people who can display challenging behaviour and emotional dysregulation?

Do you have the resilience and emotional intelligence to look beyond behaviour, understand its underlying causes, and help young people develop more positive coping strategies?

A specialist SEMH school in Preston is recruiting a Behaviour Intervention Teaching Assistant to support secondary-aged pupils with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. This is a hands‑on role suited to someone who can combine firm boundaries and confident behaviour management with patience, empathy, and consistency.

The Role - Behaviour Intervention Teaching Assistant

As a Behaviour Intervention Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils who may have SEMH, ADHD, Autism, attachment difficulties, trauma‑related needs, and associated behavioural challenges.

Your role will focus on identifying the triggers behind behaviour and intervening positively before situations elevate. Working alongside teachers and pastoral professionals, you will:

  • Provide targeted 1:1 behaviour interventions and mentoring
  • Support pupils experiencing emotional dysregulation
  • Use effective de‑escalation and behaviour management strategies
  • Help pupils recognise triggers and develop healthier coping mechanisms
  • Reinforce clear expectations, routines, and boundaries
  • Support pupils to successfully return to learning following incidents
  • Build trusting relationships with young people who may have struggled within mainstream education

This is not simply about managing difficult behaviour. The goal is to help pupils understand why they react in certain ways, develop emotional regulation, rebuild confidence, and gradually take greater responsibility for their own choices.

What's on Offer

  • Up to 600 per week
  • Full‑time, long‑term position
  • September start
  • Extensive SEMH, behaviour intervention, and de‑escalation training
  • Support from experienced specialist and pastoral professionals
  • Excellent experience for careers in Psychology, Youth Justice, Social Work, Mental Health, Counselling, or SEN Education

For someone interested in behaviour, psychology, mental health, or specialist education, this Behaviour Intervention Teaching Assistant role in Preston provides invaluable frontline experience while giving you the opportunity to make a tangible difference to young people's lives.
