The Role
Britain’s industrial economy is undergoing structural decline thanks to decades of poor policy decisions taken by multiple governments. We need to chart a new course, prioritising energy abundance, innovation, capital investment, resilience and productivity.
The Prosperity Institute is looking for a talented researcher to produce policy research and convene a movement devoted to the revival of British industry along these lines. This role will be pivotal to the future of the Prosperity Institute as it establishes its position as the leading think tank in the United Kingdom.
The Job Description
This role will include conducting and commissioning policy research using a variety of investigative methods, drafting findings into research papers, and producing communications materials (such as writing to elected representatives, drafting press releases, commissioning digital and social media content, and organising events) to ensure these messages and ideas are supported and delivered.
Convening will be an essential part of this role. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a dense network of important, influential and supportive figures throughout public life, British industry, Whitehall, Parliament, the media, and beyond.
Requirements may be subject to change according to the Institute’s research and advocacy needs. Key tasks will include:
· Conducting in-depth, empirical research into the structural problems facing British industry and British energy policy and identifying compelling solutions to them.
· Identify novel solutions and produce new analysis which has the potential to move the needle of public discussion in a meaningful fashion.
· Presenting research and findings in a digestible and engaging manner which communicates the most important points in an intellectually and academically credible fashion.
· Finding and commissioning specialist researchers with expertise in energy and industrial policy to produce additional research for the Institute.
· Publicly representing the Institute at panels, roundtables, dinners, conferences etc and presenting the Institute’s original research in an engaging and credible fashion.
· Appear in Contributions through written, digital and broadcast media to advance the Institute’s ideas and mission.
The Candidate
Skills and Experience
- Experience in political and public policy research-focused roles, for example in a Parliamentary office, Government department, think tank, campaign group, political party, industry body, or academic context.
- Understanding of a relevant area of policy such as public finance, business, regulatory institutions, and rights advocacy in areas such as freedoms of belief, expression, association, and contract.
- Ability to scrutinise policy papers and legislation critically, with an ability to grasp relevant Parliamentary procedure and regulatory structures.
- Superb drafting skills, with the ability to communicate information clearly in written form, tailoring both style and substance to the relevant audience.
- Strong analytical and research skills in a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Highly organised and focused, with a practical mindset when working with multiple stakeholders to deliver complex initiatives and events.
- Ability to multitask and prioritise workload effectively.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
