The Role
The Editorial and Research Assistant will provide editorial, research, and project administration support to the Editorial and Research Director, helping to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of the Instituteβs reports, briefings, and articles.
The postholder will support reports, articles, briefings, and related materials from commissioning to publication, requiring excellent written English, judgement, discretion, and the ability to manage several projects at once.
The Job Description

Key tasks will include:
β’ Providing editorial support and quality control, including:
β Proofreading reports, articles, briefings, and ancillary materials for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, and house style;
β Checking formatting, headings, tables, cross-references, hyperlinks, footnotes, and bibliographies for consistency and accuracy;
β Reviewing presentation, structure, factual precision, and general readiness for publication;
β Preparing publication-ready files and copy.
β’ Fact checking, source checking, and research support, including:
β Verifying factual claims, quotations, statistics, and references against original sources;
β Identifying citation issues and suggesting references where appropriate;
β Undertaking background research on reports, authors, reviewers, advisers, and policy opportunities;
β Preparing internal briefings.
β’ Supporting the overall publication process, including:
β Coordinating routine communications with researchers, authors, reviewers, and external contributors;
β Drafting author feedback on accuracy, references, presentation, and revisions;
β Liaising with graphic designers on production of reports;
β Sourcing suitable images for research publications;
β’ Managing project, milestone, and calendar administration, including:
β Tracking deadlines for outlines, drafts, review, revisions, design, approval, and publication;
β Arranging meetings, preparing agendas, circulating papers, and recording actions.
β’ Administering contracts and commissioned research processes, including:
β Preparing draft terms for commissioned researchers using agreed templates;
β Tracking contracts, signatures, deliverables, payment milestones, and correspondence;
β Maintaining records of contracts, project documents, drafts, approvals, and publication files;
β Coordinating approvals, payments, or amendments with finance team.
β’ Drafting supporting materials, including briefings, parliamentary question suggestions, Ten Minute Rule Motion notes, summaries, launch copy, and other short materials.
Experience, skills, and personal attributes
β’ Excellent written English, proofreading ability, and attention to detail.
β’ Strong organisational skills, with the ability to track deadlines, manage several projects, and keep accurate records.
β’ Confident use of Word, Outlook, Teams, and Excel, and ideally using Copilot AI across these
β’ Experience with references, footnotes, bibliographies, hyperlinks, and source checking.
β’ Good judgement with factual claims, editorial queries, confidential information, and external contributors.
β’ Clear, professional, and courteous communication.
β’ Interest and experience in public policy, research, publishing, journalism, academia, or think tanks.
β’ Highly organised and practical when delivering complex publication projects.
β’ Warm-hearted towards others, willing to help, and generous of time and knowledge.
β’ Self-motivated, diligent, and able to take initiative within agreed priorities.
β’ Smart in appearance and immaculately presented.
β’ Discretion and political nous.
Remuneration
