A market-leading principal contractor specialising in retrofit decarbonisation within the UK housing sector. The business delivers large-scale energy efficiency and regeneration schemes, typically ranging from £5m to £30m in value, working in partnership with local authorities, housing associations, and social housing providers. The organisation has established a strong reputation for delivering high-quality, compliant, and innovative solutions aimed at reducing fuel poverty and improving housing standards across both social and private rental sectors.
With regional operations across the North West, North Wales, Midlands, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and the Southern region, the company is entering a sustained period of growth aligned with national net-zero and housing improvement targets and therefore are ready to bring on board an Operations Director, this is a newly created role and an exciting proposition.
The Operations Director will play a critical leadership role within the business, reporting directly to the Managing Director. The position is responsible for overseeing the successful delivery of all operational activities across multiple regions, ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Working closely with four Regional Directors, the Operations Director will drive operational excellence, standardisation, and continuous improvement across retrofit and decarbonisation programmes.
Key Responsibilities- Strategic Leadership & Operational Oversight: Lead and manage the operational delivery of all retrofit and regeneration projects across multiple regions. Collaborate with the Managing Director to define and implement operational strategy aligned with business growth objectives. Provide leadership and direction to Regional Directors, ensuring consistency in delivery standards and performance. Drive a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement across all operational teams.
- Project Delivery & Performance: Ensure all schemes are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contractual obligations and regulatory standards. Monitor project performance against KPIs including cost, programme, quality, and customer satisfaction. Oversee risk management processes and ensure mitigation strategies are effectively implemented. Support mobilisation of new contracts and ensure effective resource allocation across regions.
- Client & Stakeholder Management: Maintain and strengthen relationships with key clients including local authorities, housing associations, and social housing providers. Act as a senior point of contact for client engagement, issue resolution, and strategic discussions. Support the business development function in securing new opportunities and frameworks.
- Commercial & Financial Management: Work closely with commercial teams to ensure robust cost control and margin protection across all projects. Contribute to financial planning, forecasting, and reporting at board level. Ensure projects are delivered in line with financial targets and contractual commitments.
- Compliance, Quality & Safety: Ensure full compliance with industry regulations, PAS 2030/2035 standards, and health & safety legislation. Promote best practice in retrofit delivery, sustainability, and quality assurance. Champion a strong safety culture across all operational activities.
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and develop Regional Directors and wider operational teams. Support talent development, succession planning, and recruitment strategies. Foster collaboration across regions and functions to drive business performance.
- Operational Excellence & Innovation: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability. Promote the adoption of innovative technologies and methodologies in retrofit delivery. Drive standardisation of systems, reporting, and operational procedures.
Essential Experience & Skills: Proven experience operating at Operations Director level within the social housing refurbishment or retrofit sector. Extensive experience delivering large-scale decarbonisation and energy efficiency programmes. Strong understanding of PAS 2030/2035 and retrofit compliance frameworks. Demonstrable experience managing multi-region operational teams. Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Strong commercial awareness and financial acumen.
Desirable: Experience working with local authorities and housing associations. Knowledge of funding streams such as SHDF, ECO, or similar schemes. Degree-qualified in construction, engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
Reporting Structure:Reports directly to the Managing Director. Direct line management of four Regional Directors: North West & North Wales, East Midlands, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire.
