Start a permanent career with HMRC and shape the nation’s future while building your own. Imagine stepping into a role where your analytical skills and intellect are challenged daily, where the decisions you make directly fund essential services that millions depend on, where you’re provided with stability and clear career progression. That’s what you can expect when joining HMRC’s Tax Specialist Programme (TSP). From day one, you'll learn on the job, work on real tax cases and develop the skills and specialist knowledge needed to become a Senior Tax Specialist. The programme provides structured training, real responsibility and a clear route into the tax profession. To succeed, you'll need to be organised, proactive, resilient and willing to take ownership of your development from the start.

HMRC is much more than ‘the tax man’. As well as collecting tax, we administer benefit payments, pay out tax credits and help to protect national interests. We interact with all kinds of people, from businesses to individuals. In fact, almost everyone comes into contact with us at some point, which makes customer service central to everything we do.

  • No previous tax experience required.
  • Minimum 2:2 degree (or equivalent).

Annual leave

When you start working at HMRC, you will receive 22 days leave (pro rata for part-time staff), which increases to 25 after a year’s service and 30 days after 10 years’ service. You will also receive one day privilege entitlement to mark the monarch’s birthday.

Flexible and part-time working

Flexi-time is available in many of our offices, subject to HMRC’s requirement to balance the needs of staff with everybody’s responsibility to meet business and service requirements. This enables staff to vary their working day and the way in which they work their total hours. Part-time and term-time working may also be available, depending on the needs of the office. Some offices operate early evening shifts which might be suitable for students or people with other commitments in the day.
