Each session will last for approximately one hour and the content will be the same across both sessions, so you only need to attend one.

The application window for the Intelligence Operations Analyst role opens on Thursday 19 November at 10am.

In the meantime, we encourage women and those from a Black, Asian or other ethnic minority background to register their interest and attend an insight event.

Please note, we’re confining registrations of interest to these groups due to their current underrepresentation in our workforce.

Shift your thinking. Those who seek to do us harm don’t work 9am to 5pm, so neither do we.

As an Intelligence Operations Analyst, you'll work in shifts to identify serious and often hidden threats our intelligence teams gather.

You'll be supporting live activity rather than building a picture over weeks or months, helping operational teams make decisions in the moment.

It’s a role with real impact; the insight and connections you and your team provide could lead to major turning points in live investigations.

You don’t need experience working in analysis to apply, but you should be able to demonstrate an ability to analyse information, data, evidence or trends.

We'll develop your existing analytical skills, starting with an initial three-month training period.

Through a mix of classroom learning and practical experience alongside analytical teams, you'll learn how to use our tools and techniques to assess a range of intelligence, including audio files, images and written communications, large data sets and location data.

You'll then join the analyst team for an initial three-year placement (with the option to extend to four years).

Intelligence Operations Analysts at MI5.

Your rotating shift pattern will involve a mix of earlies, lates and nights, including weekends.

You'll receive regular days off throughout your shift cycle, including extended periods away from work, plus dedicated personal development time.

You'll analyse information as it becomes available from a range of sources, identify patterns and anomalies, and share your findings clearly and accurately to support operational decision‑making.

Importantly, you'll never be working alone.

The nature of the shifts means we share a genuine sense of camerarderie, and you'll have the support of your team leader and experienced colleagues whenever you need assistance.

Please note that there is a hearing test as part of the application process.

This is because the role will involve listening to audio files.

If you wear hearing aids, you'll be able to complete the test using them.

You might be a final year undergraduate or a recent graduate, returning to work after a break, looking for a career change or simply a new challenge. you'll have, or be expected to obtain by September 2027, a 2:2 degree or above, in any subject or at least one year's full-time work experience using the core skills needed for analysis.

Collaborative, curious and resilient, you'll be comfortable working at pace and solving problems under pressure.

You'll also be a confident communicator, both in writing and in-person.

At all times, you'll combine attention to detail with sound judgement in time‑critical scenarios.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen.

If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered.

Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years.

This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK.

You can apply at the age of 17 years, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Full eligibility details can be found on our website.

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life.

We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing, and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats.

Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe.

A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

At MI5, diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission.

We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under‑represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio‑economic backgrounds.
