Independent Cumbrian Practice, Supportive Team, Genuine Work Life Balance. Are you looking for a role where you can enjoy brilliant clinical work and a genuinely friendly, down-to-earth team? We are working with a long-established independent practice in stunning Cumbria, North Pennines, and they are looking to welcome an additional small animal vet to their growing team.

About the Practice

This independent practice has been caring for pets and their people since 2005. Originally a one-vet mixed outfit, it has grown steadily over the years and now operates from 3 surgeries across the area. The area offers peace, space, and scenery in abundance, perfect if you enjoy fresh air, beautiful views, and avoiding endless city traffic. Rural roads can occasionally be character building, so the practice provides a monthly car cost contribution plus a generous winter tyre allowance. In July 2025, the practice made the decision to step away from farm work and focus entirely on small animals. As a result, they are expanding their veterinary team to continue delivering the high standard of care they are known for.

The Team

You would be joining a 5-vet team with a fantastic mix of experience levels and personalities:

  • A senior vet with decades of experience, a sense of humour, and a knack for everything from orthopaedics to unblocking the occasional drain.
  • A supportive husband-and-wife duo who bring a wealth of locum and small animal knowledge.
  • A calm, collected local vet who first saw practice there as a student and never looked back.
  • Two more recent additions: a confident new-grad-turned-seasoned vet with strong local roots, and a highly experienced part-timer.

The nursing and support teams are equally brilliant. The Head Nurse has been there 14 years and keeps everything running smoothly, the reception and admin teams juggle multiple branches with ease, and cake, coffee, and humour are very much part of daily life. The culture is truly collaborative: no hierarchy, no egos, and everyone mucks in. It is the kind of environment where you feel part of a close-knit family, not a production line.

What a Current Vet Says

I have been here for 5 years. The senior vets are always willing to offer advice on challenging cases, and the whole team is driven to keep improving patient care. It is a rural small animal practice where working feels like being part of a family. We support each other, we laugh a lot, and the clients are friendly and genuinely want the best for their pets.

Facilities

The practice is well-equipped for first-opinion work, with:

  • DR X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • Endoscopy
  • In-house lab
  • A strong surgical caseload, including orthopaedics led by the senior vet

Most cases are handled in-house thanks to the breadth of experience within the team. If you would like to find out more about this role please click apply and one of the team will be in touch to discuss the role further with you.
