An exciting leadership opportunity has become available for an experienced Head Veterinary Surgeon to join a well-established small animal practice in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The Team

You will be leading a supportive and collaborative team including:

  • 2 Veterinary Surgeons (with a new graduate joining)
  • 4 Registered Veterinary Nurses
  • A dedicated and experienced reception team

The current team has a range of clinical interests, including exotics and diagnostic imaging, ensuring a varied and interesting caseload. There is a strong focus on training and development, with a track record of supporting students and helping them progress into permanent roles.

The Role

As Head Veterinary Surgeon, you will play a key role in both clinical delivery and team leadership. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the clinical team and setting high standards of patient care
  • Driving clinical excellence and continuous improvement
  • Coaching, mentoring, and supporting colleagues at all levels
  • Contributing to the strategic direction of the practice
  • Managing a varied caseload of medical and surgical cases

This role is ideal for a veterinary surgeon who is passionate about leadership, development, and delivering gold-standard, evidence-based care.

Working Pattern

  • 4-day working week
  • 1 in 4 weekends
  • No out-of-hours
  • Participation in on-call support for overnight inpatients if required

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a BVSc or equivalent veterinary degree recognised in the UK
  • Be RCVS registered (or eligible)
  • Have strong clinical experience in small animal practice
  • Be confident in a leadership or senior role
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, mentoring, and team-building skills
  • Have a passion for clinical excellence and continuous improvement
