We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced Linux Engineer to join our team, with a strong focus on enterprise Red Hat Linux environments. This role is centred on operations and support, acting as a key escalation point for Linux-related issues and ensuring the stability, performance, and security of critical infrastructure platforms.
Location: Aberdeen or London preferred (hybrid working), with remote working considered for the right candidate.
Contract Type: Contract or Permanent considered.
What you’ll do:
- Provide 3rd line support for Linux-based infrastructure in a large-scale enterprise environment.
- Own and manage incident, problem, and change activities, ensuring high service availability.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement permanent resolutions to recurring issues.
- Maintain and optimise Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems across multiple environments.
- Act as a technical authority for Linux operations, providing governance and guidance on best practice.
- Collaborate with wider infrastructure, cloud, and application teams to support business-critical services.
- Create and maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and knowledge articles.
- Support continuous improvement of monitoring, automation, and operational processes.
- Provide mentorship and knowledge sharing within the team.
What to bring:
- Strong experience managing enterprise Linux environments, with a focus on Red Hat (RHEL).
- Proven background in operations / BAU support rather than pure project or build work.
- Deep understanding of core Linux systems: systemd, kernel and performance tuning, filesystems (local, NFS, CIFS), authentication (SSSD, LDAP, Kerberos, Active Directory integration).
- Experience with patching, package management (yum/dnf) and lifecycle management.
- Good understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, NTP, DHCP).
- Scripting capability (e.g. Bash, Python) for automation and operational efficiency.
- Familiarity with virtualised environments (VMware or similar).
- Experience working with monitoring and logging tools (e.g. Zabbix, Splunk, or similar).
- Strong knowledge of Linux security practices (SELinux, SSH hardening, certificates, etc.).
- Experience working within an ITIL-based support environment.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical mindset.
- Ability to work in fast-paced, enterprise environments with competing priorities.
- Confident communicator, capable of working with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proactive, self-sufficient, and committed to continuous learning.
Nice to have:
- Exposure to containerisation and Kubernetes in an enterprise setting.
- Experience supporting or working alongside SAP environments.
- Familiarity with Red Hat Satellite or similar management tools.
- Awareness of cloud-based infrastructure (Azure, AWS).
