Proper Job Theatre Company

Proper Job Theatre are seeking passionate people who believe in the power of creativity for positive social change and who want to support a theatre company rooted in community, participation and artistic ambition.

What difference will you make?

Proper Job Theatre has developed a unique and wide-ranging model that combines professional theatre-making with socially engaged practice, creative health programmes, employment initiatives and talent development. As we continue to grow, we are seeking trustees who can help us strengthen the connections between these different areas of work and support the organisation in becoming more strategically aligned and sustainable.

New trustees will help us shape a clearer and more cohesive organisational identity—ensuring that our artistic work, social impact programmes, partnerships and public messaging all support a shared long‑term vision. Their insight will help us refine how we communicate our value to funders, partners, local authorities, communities and the wider cultural sector.

Trustees will also play an important role in helping us balance ambition with resilience supporting strong governance, sustainable financial planning and organisational development during a significant period of evolution. By bringing fresh perspectives, critical thinking and specialist knowledge, trustees will help Proper Job Theatre continue to grow as an organisation that uses creativity to improve lives, create opportunities and strengthen communities across the North of England.

Most importantly, trustees will help us build a resilient and forward‑looking organisation that increases access to the arts for people who may otherwise face barriers to participation.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people who are passionate about the role creativity can play in communities and who are committed to supporting an organisation rooted in participation, inclusion and social impact.

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of professional and lived experiences, particularly in the following areas:

  • Arts, culture or performance
  • Creative industries and artist development
  • Health, wellbeing and reducing inequalities
  • Community engagement or participatory practice
  • Strategic development and partnerships
  • Fundraising, advocacy or communications

We value people who are collaborative, curious and willing to contribute ideas and perspectives to board discussions. Previous trustee experience is not required — we are keen to support people taking on a board role for the first time.

We actively encourage applications from people who are currently underrepresented on charity boards and who reflect the diversity of the communities we work with across the North of England.

Meetings take place quarterly online, with one in‑person meeting each year in Huddersfield. Trustees may also have opportunities to contribute to specific projects, conversations or working groups aligned with their interests and expertise.

What will you be doing?

Proper Job Theatre is at an important point in its development. Alongside our professional theatre work, we deliver a wide range of socially engaged and community‑based programmes, council‑funded employment and skills programmes, participatory arts activity and talent development opportunities for emerging artists.

As the organisation has grown organically across these different areas, we are now looking for trustees who can help us consolidate and articulate a more cohesive vision for the future. We want board members who are excited by complexity and able to think strategically across artistic ambition, social impact, organisational sustainability and public narrative.

Trustees will support the leadership team to strengthen how the organisation connects its different strands of work, helping us clarify who we are, how our programmes speak to one another and how we communicate our impact to partners, funders, communities and audiences. This includes contributing to conversations around long‑term business planning, financial sustainability, partnerships, governance and organisational identity.

We are particularly interested in people who can help us hold the bigger picture balancing creativity with structure, growth with clarity, and social purpose with a sustainable operating model.

As a trustee, you will play an important role in helping us think strategically, champion our mission and support the senior leadership team as we develop new opportunities, partnerships and programmes. This year we are hoping to apply for NPO funding with Arts Council England and the board will be key in supporting that process.

Our board values openness, collaboration and creativity. This is a meaningful opportunity to support a respected theatre company that believes creativity can transform lives, strengthen communities and create new opportunities for people across the region.
