The Role: The Technical Account Manager (TAM) is a strategic customer advisor and business outcome leader who partners with enterprise customers to drive measurable security value and cyber resiliency. This is a senior, consultative role that operates at the intersection of technology and business strategy—engaging at the CISO and executive level while maintaining the technical depth necessary to guide complex Proofpoint deployments. The TAM serves as a trusted executive consultant, proactively identifying strategic risks, architecting adoption and value realization plans, and coaching customers on aligning Proofpoint capabilities to their broader security and business frameworks. While the role has evolved to lead with strategic advisory, a strong technical and security software foundation remains essential. Successful candidates will bring executive presence, commercial acumen, and a proven track record of driving customer outcomes at the enterprise level—combined with deep experience in Linux, messaging, and cloud security environments. Your Day-to-Day:
- Strategic & Advisory (~50%): Drive business outcomes aligned to customer security and organizational goals, ensuring measurable ROI across the Proofpoint investment. Serve as a strategic risk advisor—proactively identifying and mitigating renewal, adoption, and security posture risks before they impact the customer. Act as an executive consultant—building trusted relationships at CISO/VP level, delivering strategic insights and forward-looking recommendations. Architect adoption and value realization plans that ensure customers maximize the full breadth of their Proofpoint deployment. Coach customers on cyber resiliency strategy—aligning Proofpoint capabilities to their broader security framework and organizational risk tolerance. Lead executive business reviews and strategic planning sessions, articulating security value in business terms.
- Technical & Operational (~50%): Maintain technical expertise across the Proofpoint platform—staying current on product capabilities, integrations, and roadmap. Understand the customer’s unique security goals, business requirements, network configuration, and Proofpoint deployment; proactively make recommendations to improve security posture and system performance. Act as a technical advocate to manage and monitor interactions with the Proofpoint technical support team, proactively escalating issues and feature requests. Conduct proactive health checks and provide system performance recommendations aligned to the customer’s deployment. Provide insight on industry trends, the security landscape, best practices, and product roadmaps affecting the customer’s business. Assist customers with setting goals and success criteria for their Proofpoint deployment, and provide reports to track key metrics and progress. Conduct weekly status calls, monthly management calls, and periodic executive-level business reviews.
Qualifications:
- Strategic & Business Competencies: Proven ability to drive measurable business outcomes for enterprise customers—translating technical capabilities into tangible security and business value. Executive presence and demonstrated experience engaging at C-suite and VP level, including CISOs, CIOs, and business unit leaders. Strategic risk assessment and advisory experience—ability to identify adoption gaps, renewal risks, and security posture vulnerabilities proactively. Strong commercial acumen—solid understanding of ARR, renewals, customer lifetime value, and the commercial dimensions of customer success. Experience building and executing customer success and adoption strategies at scale. Ability to translate technical capabilities into business value narratives tailored to executive audiences.
- Technical Foundation: Extensive industry experience in a client/professional services, sales engineering, senior support engineering, IT operations management, or senior engineer role with exposure to multiple technology areas. Maintain technical expertise across the Proofpoint platform and the broader cybersecurity landscape. Knowledge of data communication concepts and technologies—specifically email, networking, and cloud services. Knowledge of Linux, SMTP, and MySQL. Working knowledge of Windows, Active Directory, and Microsoft Exchange. A history of successfully leading and directing technical staff through crisis situations. Knowledge of project management principles and strong time management skills. Ability to effectively work in a team environment as well as independently. Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Spanish, German, French, Italian or other languages beneficial.
Preferred experience:
- Background in cybersecurity consulting or advisory roles.
- Experience with customer success methodologies and frameworks (e.g., Gainsight, CSQL, QBR models).
- Track record of influencing customer retention, expansion, and NPS improvement.
- Adaptable and willing to learn new technologies as the threat landscape evolves.
- Very strong customer service and excellent communications skills, both written and oral.
