The Temporary Works Construction Manager is responsible for the planning, coordination, design oversight, and safe execution of all temporary works associated with construction activities. This role ensures compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations, and project requirements throughout the lifecycle of temporary works.
Temporary works may include scaffolding, formwork, falsework, excavation supports, propping, access platforms, and lifting arrangements
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Coordination
- Develop and implement the Temporary Works Management Plan (TWMP).
- Ensure all temporary works are identified, designed, and scheduled in line with project programmes.
- Coordinate with design teams, subcontractors, and site management to integrate temporary works into construction sequences.
- Maintain the Temporary Works Register.
Design & Engineering Oversight
- Ensure all temporary works designs are carried out by competent designers and properly checked (Category 0-3 checks).
- Review and approve temporary works designs where delegated authority is given.
- Verify that designs meet relevant standards (e.g., BS 5975 or equivalent).
- Ensure design briefs are complete and accurately reflect site conditions.
Site Implementation
- Oversee the safe erection, use, modification, and dismantling of temporary works.
- Ensure all temporary works are installed in accordance with approved designs.
- Carry out inspections and ensure permits are issued prior to loading or use.
- Monitor compliance during construction activities.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all temporary works activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments and method statement reviews (RAMS).
- Lead incident investigations related to temporary works and implement corrective actions.
- Promote a strong safety culture on site.
Coordination & Communication
- Act as the primary point of contact for all temporary works matters.
- Act as the project TWC.
- Liaise with the Temporary Works Designer (TWD), Temporary Works Design Checker (TWDC), and site teams.
- Attend project meetings and provide updates on temporary works status.
- Ensure clear communication of temporary works procedures across the project.
Documentation & Control
- Maintain accurate records of designs, inspections, permits, and approvals.
- Ensure proper filing and version control of temporary works documentation.
- Approve and monitor Temporary Works Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of temporary works principles and construction methods.

Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred.
- Significant experience in construction, with a strong focus on temporary works.
- Formal training in Temporary Works (e.g., TWC/TWS certification).
- Knowledge of relevant standards such as BS 5975 (UK) or equivalent international codes.
- IOSH/NEBOSH certification (desirable).
