Overview

Our client, a specialist contractor delivering major work packages within complex heavy civil engineering environments, is seeking an experienced General Superintendent to support the successful delivery of one of the UK’s largest infrastructure programmes.

Job Description

Reporting directly to senior project leadership, you will be responsible for coordinating operational delivery across designated construction areas, ensuring that safety, quality, programme, and commercial objectives are achieved. This role is particularly suited to candidates with soil mixing or ground improvement experience, although we also welcome applications from experienced Tier 1 contractor General Superintendents with a strong background in major infrastructure and heavy civil engineering. You will work closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Engineering teams, and specialist subcontractors to drive construction activities across the full project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project & Site Delivery
    • Lead construction delivery across designated work packages from planning through to completion
    • Coordinate site operations to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery
    • Ensure works are delivered in line with programme timelines and budget requirements
  • Operations & Performance
    • Manage labour, plant, and subcontractor resources across multiple work fronts
    • Monitor productivity, programme adherence, and operational performance
    • Implement corrective actions to address delays or performance issues
  • Planning & Coordination
    • Support construction planning, logistics, sequencing, and temporary works coordination
    • Participate in technical and site meetings to resolve construction and engineering challenges
    • Maintain effective coordination across multidisciplinary teams
  • Health, Safety & Quality
    • Ensure full compliance with project health & safety, environmental, and quality standards
    • Conduct regular site inspections to ensure works meet design and specification requirements
    • Support implementation of RAMS and safe systems of work
    • Promote a strong safety-first culture across all site operations
  • Leadership & Stakeholder Management
    • Lead, mentor, and support construction teams on site
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and delivery partners
    • Provide clear communication and direction across all operational teams

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree, HNC, or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline
  • Proven experience delivering major infrastructure or heavy civil engineering projects
  • Experience in a General Superintendent or similar senior site leadership role
  • Strong experience managing large site teams, subcontractors, and heavy plant
  • Excellent understanding of construction sequencing, logistics, and site coordination
  • Strong operational knowledge of infrastructure and civil engineering delivery

Desirable

  • Experience in soil mixing, ground improvement, deep foundations, or geotechnical works
  • Background working with Tier 1 contractors or specialist civil engineering contractors
  • Experience delivering complex works within large-scale infrastructure programmes
