The Role

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Chartered), you will act as a technical authority delivering complex utilities and process engineering projects for global manufacturing clients. You will partner directly with clients from concept through detailed design, while providing leadership, oversight, and technical sign-off for engineering outputs. This is a pivotal, client-facing role combining deep technical expertise with mentoring and project leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical and utilities engineering projects from feasibility through to detailed design.
  • Act as principal engineer and technical partner for clients across manufacturing and industrial environments.
  • Design, model and implement new and modified utility systems and pipework.
  • Provide technical expertise in heat recovery, heat pumps, chillers, HVAC and wider utility technologies.
  • Support process design, including preparation and checking of flowsheets, PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Deliver sustainability and decarbonisation projects using holistic analysis of existing processes.
  • Perform equipment sizing calculations (e.g. PRVs, control valves, line sizing).
  • Review, approve and sign off engineering work produced by other engineers.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, driving continuous improvement and technical excellence.
  • Uphold engineering standards, BMS compliance and best practice.

Experience & Skills

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a recognised institution.
  • Degree in Mechanical, Process or Chemical Engineering (MEng preferred).
  • Senior technical experience within manufacturing, utilities, or engineering consultancy environments.
  • Strong practical knowledge of industrial utilities including:
    • Boilers and steam systems
    • Refrigeration and cooling systems
    • Compressed air and water treatment
    • HVAC and process utilities
  • Proven leadership, mentoring and technical sign-off experience.
  • Strong analytical capability with experience sizing process and utility equipment.
  • High level of IT proficiency (Microsoft Office, Project, Visio) with strong Excel skills.
  • Client-focused, commercially aware and confident communicator.
  • Proactive, accountable and delivery-driven mindset.
