We are seeking an experienced Senior Civil Design Engineer to support a portfolio of National Grid infrastructure projects. The role involves leading the civil and structural design elements for substation, overhead line and other transmission-related assets, ensuring compliance with National Grid's technical specifications and governance processes. This is an Outside IR35 contract position, offering hybrid working with on-site collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and produce civil and structural designs for National Grid transmission projects (substations, foundations, compounds, cable routes, OHL works, access roads, drainage, etc.).
  • Ensure all designs comply with National Grid TP / TS standards and relevant industry codes (BS EN, Eurocodes).
  • Prepare design calculations, sketches, reports, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Manage design risk assessments and contribute to CDM compliance.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including electrical, geotechnical, structural, and environmental engineers.
  • Review design deliverables from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Attend design reviews, client meetings, and site visits where required.
  • Support the project through construction queries and design assurance stages.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Strong background in civil/structural design within the power, utilities, or energy infrastructure sector.
  • Proven experience working on National Grid projects (TP137, TP141, TS standards, etc.).
  • Proficient in civil and structural analysis/design software (e.g., STAAD, TEDDS, Civil 3D, AutoCAD).
  • Solid understanding of foundation design, structural steelwork, concrete structures, drainage design, and site infrastructure layout.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver under the requirements of an Outside IR35 engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward it.
  • CDAE (or previously approved) highly desirable.
  • Experience liaising directly with National Grid or other UK DNO/TOs.
  • Experience in leading and signing off civil design packages.
