We are seeking an experienced Senior Cable Engineer to support the delivery of major electricity network projects across Distribution Network Operator (DNO) frameworks throughout the UK. The successful candidate will lead the design and technical delivery of underground cable systems, supporting network reinforcement, asset replacement, customer connections and energy transition initiatives. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will be responsible for the development, review and approval of cable designs from feasibility through to construction and commissioning, ensuring compliance with client specifications, industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of HV and EHV underground cable projects.
- Produce and review cable system designs for 11kV, 33kV, 66kV and 132kV networks.
- Undertake cable sizing, ampacity, voltage drop, fault level and thermal assessments.
- Develop and review detailed design packages, including drawings, calculations, specifications and technical reports.
- Support route selection studies, feasibility assessments and optioneering activities.
- Coordinate the design of cable routes, joint bays, sealing end compounds and transition arrangements.
- Review utility records, survey information, ground investigation data and route constraints.
- Interface with substation, protection, civil and overhead line design teams to ensure coordinated engineering solutions.
- Lead technical design reviews and provide engineering assurance for project deliverables.
- Manage technical risks and develop effective mitigation strategies throughout project delivery.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning and energisation activities.
- Liaise directly with DNOs, contractors, ICPs and key project stakeholders throughout project delivery.
- Ensure all designs comply with DNO standards, ENA requirements, CDM Regulations and Health & Safety legislation.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, graduates and technicians.
- Act as Lead Engineer on allocated projects and provide technical guidance to project teams.
Requirements
Essential
- Degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Proven experience delivering underground cable projects within UK electricity networks.
- Strong understanding of cable system design principles for HV and EHV networks.
- Experience working on DNO, IDNO, ICP or utility framework projects.
- Knowledge of DNO engineering standards, specifications and design requirements.
- Experience producing and reviewing engineering calculations and technical reports.
- Understanding of cable installation methodologies including direct burial, ducted routes and HDD crossings.
- Strong stakeholder management and client-facing communication skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Experience delivering 66kV and 132kV cable projects.
- Knowledge of ENA Engineering Recommendations and relevant industry standards.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
- Experience supporting framework bids, tenders and business development activities.
