About the Role
We are seeking a Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join our team in Wolverhampton. You will:
- Lead and manage EC&I engineering teams delivering high-integrity and complex control systems for major projects involving mechanical handling machinery, process systems, and heavy engineering plant systems in highly regulated environments such as Energy, Research & Defence.
- Oversee full lifecycle delivery from front-end engineering through detailed design, manufacture, and client handover.
- Take on line management responsibilities, mentoring engineers and ensuring compliance with company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead EC&I design teams across multiple projects, ensuring technical compliance and delivery within budget and schedule.
- Design safety-critical control systems including power distribution, PLC/DCS systems, SCADA-based systems, and process instrumentation.
- Oversee conceptual design studies, calculations, and substantiation documentation for mechanical handling machinery, process systems, and heavy engineering plant systems.
- Manage design control files, verify calculations, and supervise design deliverables.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and liaise with manufacturing, testing, and commissioning teams.
- Ensure compliance with UK H&S legislation and relevant standards.
- Participate in HAZOP and design reviews.
- Provide technical input for tenders and support safety case submissions.
- Drive continuous improvement and problem-solving initiatives.
- Line management duties include resource allocation, performance reviews, recruitment, and professional development.
What We’re Looking For
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer status and IET membership.
- Extensive EC&I engineering experience in mechanical handling machinery, process systems, and/or heavy engineering plant systems within regulated industries.
- Proven ability to manage and lead design teams.
- Knowledge of IEC 61508 and British/European standards (advantageous).
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

- Up to £83k starting salary.
