Progress Teachers are working closely with a number of mainstream primary schools across Birmingham to provide high-quality 1:1 support for pupils with complex needs, including ASC, ADHD, SEMH and behaviours that may challenge. We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate Complex Needs Teaching Assistant to join our team and make a meaningful impact on the lives of children who require specialist support to thrive in school.

In this role, you will work with pupils on a 1:1 or small-group basis, supporting their learning, emotional regulation, and personal development. You’ll collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, families, and wider multidisciplinary professionals to implement consistent, personalised strategies that promote positive progress.

Responsibilities
  • Support pupils with complex needs by following tailored support plans and behaviour intervention strategies.
  • Provide effective de-escalation, emotional regulation support, and positive behaviour guidance.
  • Assist pupils with daily routines, providing a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCOs, external professionals and families to create cohesive support.
  • Monitor pupil progress, adapt approaches as needed, and contribute to review meetings.
  • Support children during learning activities, play, transitions, and social interaction times.
  • Maintain accurate records, including progress notes, behaviour logs, and intervention data.
  • Promote inclusive practice and help pupils develop independence, confidence, and positive relationships.
Skills & Experience
  • Experience supporting children with ASC, ADHD, SEMH, or other complex additional needs.
  • Strong understanding of behaviour management, de-escalation, and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Excellent communication skills with pupils, staff, and families.
  • Patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach to supporting diverse needs.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Organised with strong record-keeping skills.
  • A DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Level 3 (or equivalent) in Supporting Teaching and Learning or a related qualification.
