Starting Salary £46,125 (£41,000 base salary + 12.5% shift allowance). Hours paid door-to-door + all overtime at time and a half.

Electro-Motive Diesel are looking for a Field Service Engineer who will primarily be operating between Eastleigh, Tonbridge in Kent and the Midlands. This role would be ideal for an experienced technician with a track record of dealing with diesel engine technology/equipment.

As part of the Field Service Engineer team, you will be instrumental in maintaining the customer’s locomotive fleet to ensure safe and reliable operation, through the delivery of proactive and reactive, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance at various locations including railway sidings, depots and customer sites. You will take a proactive approach to identifying and reporting potential issues and defects that could lead to loco failure or problems with reliability. In delivering a reliable service for our customers you will take part in the on-call roster. Overnight stays may be required where work cannot be completed in a set time.

This is predominantly a lone working role where you will be expected to work autonomously using tools and procedures available to you as well as your own initiative and skillset, to ensure vehicles are reliable and accessible for the customers' services. You will be supported by a friendly and dedicated team and approachable managers who care about every team member and provide individual self-development through continuous training.

The Field Service Engineer role includes:

  • Carrying out scheduled maintenance, repair, overhaul, modification and fault-finding activities.
  • Responding to the customer’s unscheduled events in a rapid & efficient manner while delivering high standards of engineering workmanship, to include detailed reports and documentation.
  • Complete modifications and special checks within the scheduled maintenance.
  • Acting as a role model with a safety mindset exemplifying the company’s QHSE Policies and Core values.
  • Building productive and effective working relationships with company staff, peers and customers.
  • Partaking in a 24/7 on-call roster to provide out of hours support to the customer. You will cover 1 week in 10 for nights and 1 week in 10 for days (including weekends).
  • Ensuring all work is documented correctly through our maintenance management system.

Successful FSE candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

Qualifications

Essential:

  • L3 Engineering Apprenticeship, BTEC National Certificate/ONC in Engineering or European equivalent.
  • Driving license.
  • Prior experience maintaining and repairing diesel electric locomotives, ideally experience working with Class 66 and Class 69.

Desirable:

  • Emergency First Aid.
  • Designated Person.
  • Personal Track Safety.

Competencies/Experience

  • Proven record of working effectively with Diesel engineering technology, associated systems and controls through experience gained in similar position/similar locomotive.
  • Ability to meet people with ease and confidence, understanding and accommodating the customers' needs.
  • Ability to self-start and proactively deliver the service.
  • Strong communicator, able to foster relationships at all levels with both customers and peers.
  • Able to be assertive and make decisions in a timely manner, but remain non-confrontational when handling or involved in conflict situations.
  • A logical, analytical, and objective approach to problem solving and fault diagnosis.
  • Detail focused with a disciplined and detailed approach to task completion.
  • A safety-first mindset and clear understanding of the safety culture within the UK rail industry and how maintenance impacts on delivering safety.
  • Reasonable IT skills with a knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • A flexible approach and attitude to working hours that are out of normal hours of work.
