JOB PURPOSE
Reporting to the Head of Finance EMDL, the Commercial Accountant will be a key member of the finance team.
They will develop close working relationships with the Senior Management team supporting strategic decision making by providing meaningful and insightful analysis based on accurate and timely data.
The role involves being a true Business Partner, constantly challenging financial performance in conjunction with the business unit operational team with the objective of stimulating and driving a culture of continuous improvement.
JOB RELATED STATISTICS
- Responsible for commercial challenge and support to the £75m EMDL business within the UK and Europe
- Supporting and challenging the teams in the Business - Operations, Commercial, Inventory
- Progress Rail UK finance team is based in Sandiacre.
The EMDL business is run from 2 primary locations: Longport & Doncaster.
Expected to travel to these sites to meet operational & commercial teams as required.
In addition, there will be ad hoc travel to the European sites in Belgium & Germany.
JOB DUTIES
- Conduct contract reviews and have a thorough understanding of the financial implications, ensuring we have any necessary controls in place
- Work closely with the Operational Managers and Contract Managers to drive the monthly forecasting process for each contract, maintaining transparency and accuracy of profitability.
- Support financially on any new bids/tenders
- Ensure the correct revenue is recognised monthly based on long term contract accounting methodology
- Liaise with the billing team to ensure accurate invoicing to the contract
- Regular updates and review of contract performance with Management, including cost centre reporting
- Deputies for the Head of Finance EMDL
- Supporting the annual budgeting and forecasting preparation and comparison to actual performance, with specific focus on product/customer sales and margins
- Ad hoc financial and non financial support to local management
- Ensure all activities meet the objectives of standardised reporting and standardised working practices across the UK and EU
- Supporting with Internal and External Audit requirements
- Proactive development of improvement initiatives and management of related projects
- Ensure accounting policies and procedures are followed
- Ensure all reporting timetables are met
- Contribute to team effort in meeting individual and collective deadlines.
BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE
- Qualified Accountant (CIMA/ACCA/CA)
- Minimum of 3 years finance experience
- Excellent Communicator with a proven ability to build relationships at all levels across the business
- Confidence to travel to depots regularly to meet with Business Partners
- Attention to detail and have a 'right first time' attitude
- Ability to produce and present business cases/reports
- Self-motivated and flexible individual who is a strong team player
- Proactive approach to identification and resolution of improvement opportunities
- Ability to adapt to change quickly and prioritise multiple demands
- Ability to understand the business strategy and make decisions within the context of the bigger picture
- Up to date working knowledge and experience of current Accounting Regulations
- Experience of ERP systems, Microsoft Office packages, particularly excel
