Careers Adviser – Progress Careers

Located in Durham, the role can be offered for employed or self‑employed candidates working 2/3 days per week. We also accept a trainee willing to work towards a Level 6 qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct client‑focused, impartial personal career guidance interviews, supporting students/clients to make informed, realistic career decisions.
  • Work closely with career leads to generate and maintain client records electronically, including the creation and distribution of a summary of guidance.
  • Contribute to a strategic vision for the organisation and wider division.
  • Use expert knowledge of careers information and labour market intelligence to enable students/clients to identify and use relevant information.
  • Organise careers fairs and support other relevant activities with the Careers Leader.
  • Facilitate career‑related learning activities in groups with students/clients.
  • Refer to specialist services if required to support specific needs of students/clients.
  • Communicate with relevant external agencies and networks to enhance the programme.
  • Abide by relevant legislation, codes of professional practice and safeguarding policies.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Appropriate qualification in careers guidance (Level 6 or above).
  • Experience working within an IAG setting.
  • IT literacy (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other platforms).
  • Ability to work to tight timelines and produce high‑quality work under pressure.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise multiple work streams.
  • Confident presenting to large group sizes.
  • Proactive, innovative, and anticipatory in approach.
  • Numerate with strong attention to detail, and set high standards for own work.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Build strong working relationships with senior staff in schools.
  • Keen to learn and develop new skills and capabilities.
  • Collaborative team player, supportive of colleagues and committed to the company mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness and compliance with GDPR legislation.
  • Represent Progress Careers professionally at career events.

Desirable

  • Flexible work schedule – potential for occasional evening responsibilities.
  • Experience creating learning resources and lesson planning.
  • Existing registration on the CDI Professional Register.
  • Strong networks and awareness of provision within the relevant geographical territory.

Due to access to children and/or vulnerable adults, an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check is required.
