About The Role
As a Tax Junior, your main responsibility will be assisting the other team members on personal tax compliance work. This will include speaking to HMRC, checking tax calculations, and preparing the communications (letters and emails) to clients. Over time, you will prepare tax returns for high-net-worth clients, which will be supported by AI.
Key Responsibilities
- Liaison with clients, government departments and third parties by post, e-mail & telephone in accordance with instructions from other team members.
- Understand the structure of the business, the services the business offers, and how the business operates daily and throughout different times of the year.
- Demonstrate willingness to assist team members and begin to proactively deal with tasks.
- Have a willingness to learn basic tax principles, the relevance of deadlines, and the importance of meeting deadlines.
- Begin study of professional qualification – Association of Taxation Technicians.
- To carry out tax compliance matters in line with the level of training.
- Be able to competently handle phone calls and redirect calls to the appropriate person in the team.
- Be able to competently make calls to HMRC regarding tax codes, underpayments and basic tax matters.
- With training, be able to prepare basic HMRC tax returns for clients and arrange filings with HMRC.
- Be involved in written and verbal communications with HMRC to ensure that the clients’ tax affairs are kept up to date.
- Demonstrate that you have good organisational skills so that clients are effectively managed and tasks are followed up.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Support towards ATT will be provided.
- Some previous experience dealing with personal taxation is preferred, but not crucial.
- A basic understanding of personal tax.
- Knowledge of Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
- Proficient in managing own workload.
- Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent organisational skills so that clients are effectively managed, and tasks are followed up.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive material and information.
- Ability to build relationships with team members with a foundation of trust and responsibility.
- Be able to remain calm under pressure with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to function and contribute effectively as part of a high-achieving team.
