Project Manager

As a Project Manager for a major rail systems delivery programme, you will be responsible for ensuring successful contract delivery within agreed timeframes, budgets, and quality standards. This includes overseeing the completion of procurement, preparing for contract award, and managing works across key project phases. The role offers the opportunity to contribute to a landmark infrastructure project at a pivotal stage, introducing innovative technology to the UK rail network.

As a Project Manager, you will need to have/be:

  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop, plan, and integrate projects to optimise costs and benefits.
  • Effective problem-solving capabilities, managing multiple workstreams while balancing stakeholder, time, cost, and quality demands.
  • Sound decision-making, including gathering, synthesising, and applying information with logical judgement.
  • Ability to provide clear direction by analysing data, defining strategies, and documenting rationale.
  • Skilled in influencing and negotiating with both internal teams and external supply chain partners.
  • Solid understanding of project management principles, aligned to APM Project Manager level.
  • Knowledge of risk identification and management.
  • Understanding of project scheduling, dependency management, and risk analysis.
  • Awareness of challenges in delivering multi-interface projects.
  • Holds a degree or equivalent qualification/experience in project management, engineering, or commercial disciplines.
  • Familiarity with rail systems and/or telecommunications is advantageous.
  • Proven experience managing complex, high-value projects.
  • Involvement across full project lifecycles from pre-contract to commissioning.
  • Experience delivering outcomes across multiple functions and disciplines.
  • Leadership experience, both directly and within matrixed teams.
  • Background in managing third-party contractors and suppliers.

  • Working Hours : Full time Monday – Friday
  • Location : Birmingham/Hybrid (3 days office based)

Role of Project Manager:

  • Provide project management support to Senior Project Managers or Heads of Delivery for assigned rail systems projects.
  • Assist in the successful delivery of key rail systems objectives and outcomes.
  • Liaise with stakeholders relevant to the specific rail systems project as needed.
  • Support the management of change originating from delivery teams, including scope and cost impacts, escalating issues when necessary.
  • Contribute to regular and ad hoc reporting on project progress to senior leadership and programme forums.
  • Help ensure project plans are created, maintained, and analysed to identify and mitigate delivery risks.
  • Support the implementation of mitigating actions to address potential milestone delays, escalating where required.
  • Actively contribute within an integrated delivery team, including internal and external contributors, to meet project requirements.
  • Manage package contractors to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the required scope and quality.
  • Ensure successful integration with related infrastructure projects.
  • Fulfil the role of Project Manager under the NEC3 contract framework.
