The SFX Technician is responsible for the safe installation, operation, and touring maintenance of special effects systems on live events and touring productions. This includes working closely with other departments at BPM SFX to deliver high-quality effects in line with creative requirements, while ensuring full compliance with health and safety standards. This role involves extensive travel, long working hours, and adaptability to varying venues, environments, and production demands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation, testing of SFX equipment prior to deployment
  • Liaise with Project Managers, Technical, and Coordinators to understand show requirements
  • Install and rig SFX equipment including (but not limited to):
    • Pyrotechnics
    • Flame systems
    • Cryogenic effects
    • Confetti, streamers, and atmospheric effects
  • Work at height where required
  • Complete system checks and testing prior to rehearsals or show
  • Operate SFX equipment during live performances, often in sync with other departments.
  • Maintain consistency across shows
  • Respond quickly to technical issues under pressure
  • Maintain compliance with local regulations, permits, and licensing requirements
  • Travel domestically and internationally as part of touring productions
  • Represent the company professionally when interacting with clients and production teams

Skills & Experience

  • Experience working in live events, touring, or production environments
  • Good problem-solving skills under pressure
  • Ability to work long, irregular hours and travel frequently
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to relocate to near our Oakmill Office
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Experience with lasers or SFX systems
  • Knowledge of timecode-based programming and control systems
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., IPAF, PASMA, pyrotechnics licences, laser safety certifications)
