We need a strategic architect with 12â15+ years who defines the architectural vision for IT systems and BSS modernisation across BT International. You own platform transformation, vendor rationalisation and application portfolio simplification strategy that directly impacts product team autonomy, cost efficiency and speed to market.
Essential Experience
- Strategic BSS Architecture & Leadership: Defining longâterm vision for internal systems including billing, order management, product catalogue, CPQ and customer lifecycle management with deep understanding of data models, processes and how these support business operations.
- Proven experience creating E2E architectures at scale with business and product stakeholders.
- LeadâtoâCash (L2C) and OrderâtoâCash (O2C) transformation at scale across Tierâ1 telecom operator environments.
- Leads architectural decisionâmaking and design transformation initiatives across the organisation.
- Strong stakeholder management: working with enterprise software vendors as strategic partners, negotiating technical implementations and managing complex stakeholder relationships.
Application Portfolio & Vendor Rationalisation
- Application portfolio rationalisation: making strategic keep/modernise/retire decisions based on technical fitness, business value and architectural alignment whilst managing stakeholder expectations.
- Vendor rationalisation leadership: reducing vendor dependencies through strategic build vs buy decisions, phasing out unnecessary thirdâparty systems in favour of composable inâhouse capabilities.
Integration Architecture & Modernisation
- APIâfirst integration architecture: establishing patterns that decouple BSS systems from each other and from product applications, creating clear service boundaries that enable independent team delivery and reduce system dependencies.
- Platform integration architecture: extensive experience designing APIâfirst integration, eventâdriven patterns and service abstraction layers that enable loose coupling in complex system landscapes.
- Modernisation patterns: expert knowledge of incremental modernisation approaches including microservices, eventâdriven integration and API gateways that enable transformation without bigâbang rewrites.
API & Integration Leadership
- Deep knowledge of TMF/ODA frameworks for product and service APIs.
- Expertise in integration patterns (OpenAPI, REST, gRPC, GraphQL).
- Eventâdriven architecture leadership with pub/sub and event brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- TMF standards: Product Ordering (TMF641), Service Ordering, Service Activation, Service Inventory (TMF638).
Product & Data Modelling Leadership
- Skilled in product modelling (TMF ODA/SID, canonical data models) at scale.
- Leading simplification efforts across BSS/TMF product models and data models â can critique and drive refactoring.
- Strong grasp of data/information modelling for interoperability and reuse.
Distributed Systems & Cloud Architecture
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, transaction management and telemetry pipelines at scale.
- Experience designing for multiâcloud, hybrid and onâprem environments.
- Skilled in cloudânative patterns (PaaS, SaaS, serverless, containers, orchestration).
Collaboration & Governance
- Collaboration with Data & AI architects: ensuring IT systems generate highâquality data with proper lineage and governance, enabling analytics and AI capabilities.
- Architecture governance: driving design reviews and conformance processes, ensuring solutions align with platform standards whilst empowering team autonomy.
- Technical depth: handsâon background with coding capability enabling credibility with engineering teams and participation in technical spikes and POCs to validate architectural decisions.
Highly Desirable
- Technical Background & Platform Engineering: Strong engineering background with handsâon experience in software development or systems engineering, demonstrating technical credibility through active contribution.
- Proficient in backend programming (Python, Java, C++).
- Platform engineering mindset: understanding platformâasâaâproduct principles, developer experience design, selfâservice capabilities that enable team autonomy at scale.
Observability & Modern Platforms
- Proficient with observability frameworks (Prometheus, ElasticSearch, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) for metrics, logs and traces.
- Experienced in data persistence across SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL), NoSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB) and TSDB (TimescaleDB, InfluxDB, Prometheus TSDB).
Platform Technologies & BSS Vendor Platforms
- Open source workflow engines (Temporal).
- Stream/batch processing (Flink, Spark).
- Test automation: Robot Framework and BDD.
- BSS vendor platforms: Salesforce, Amdocs, Ciena.
- BSS/OSS proficiency: deep understanding of Product Catalogue, CPQ, SOM, EPC and their interactions.
- Telecom domain knowledge: understanding of WAN, overlay and security products.
Enterprise Platforms & Cloud
- Experience with major enterprise platforms (Salesforce, ServiceNow, Microsoft) and telcoâspecific BSS vendors â can negotiate technical approaches and influence vendor roadmaps.
- Cloud platforms (AWS or GCP).
Telco Domain & Delivery
- Telco transformation context: navigating regulatory requirements, billing accuracy, revenue assurance and operational continuity challenges.
- Background in telco operations and BSS domains with understanding of technical and organisational challenges in transforming missionâcritical revenueâimpacting systems.
- Product operating model experience: understanding how architecture enables rather than constrains product team autonomy and delivery velocity.
- Experience building and leading architecture teams, developing technical leadership capability and establishing architectural practices that scale.
- AI/Agentic: driving adoption roadmap for process automation.
