You own platform transformation, vendor rationalisation and application portfolio simplification strategy that directly impacts product team autonomy, cost efficiency and speed to market.
Essential Experience
- Strategic BSS architecture: defining long‑term vision for internal systems including billing, order management, product catalogue, CPQ and customer lifecycle management – with deep understanding of data models, processes and how these support business operations
- Proven experience creating E2E architectures at scale with business and product stakeholders
- Lead‑to‑Cash (L2C) and Order‑to‑Cash (O2C) transformation at scale across Tier‑1 telecom operator environments
- Leads architectural decision‑making and design transformation initiatives across the organisation
- Strong stakeholder management: working with enterprise software vendors as strategic partners, negotiating technical implementations and managing complex stakeholder relationships
Application Portfolio & Vendor Rationalisation
- Application portfolio rationalisation: making strategic keep/modernise/retire decisions based on technical fitness, business value and architectural alignment whilst managing stakeholder expectations
- Vendor rationalisation leadership: reducing vendor dependencies through strategic build‑vs‑buy decisions, phasing out unnecessary third‑party systems in favour of composable in‑house capabilities
Integration Architecture & Modernisation
- API‑first integration architecture: establishing patterns that decouple BSS systems from each other and from product applications, creating clear service boundaries that enable independent team delivery and reduce system dependencies
- Platform integration architecture: extensive experience designing API‑first integration, event‑driven patterns and service abstraction layers that enable loose coupling in complex system landscapes
- Modernisation patterns: expert knowledge of incremental modernisation approaches including microservices, event‑driven integration and API gateways that enable transformation without big‑bang rewrites
API & Integration Leadership
- Strong expertise in API lifecycle design using OpenAPI specifications
- Deep knowledge of TMF/ODA frameworks for product and service APIs
- Expertise in integration patterns (OpenAPI, REST, gRPC, GraphQL)
- Event‑driven architecture leadership with pub/sub and event brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
- TMF standards: Product Ordering (TMF641), Service Ordering, Service Activation, Service Inventory (TMF638)
Product & Data Modelling Leadership
- Skilled in product modelling (TMF ODA/SID, canonical data models) at scale
- Leading simplification efforts across BSS/TMF product models and data models – can critique and drive refactoring
- Strong grasp of data/information modelling for interoperability and reuse
Distributed Systems & Cloud Architecture
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, transaction management and telemetry pipelines at scale
- Experience designing for multi‑cloud, hybrid and on‑prem environments
- Skilled in cloud‑native patterns (PaaS, SaaS, serverless, containers, orchestration)
Collaboration & Governance
- Collaboration with Data & AI architects: ensuring IT systems generate high‑quality data with proper lineage and governance, enabling analytics and AI capabilities
- Architecture governance: driving design reviews and conformance processes, ensuring solutions align with platform standards whilst empowering team autonomy
- Technical depth: hands‑on background with coding capability enabling credibility with engineering teams and participation in technical spikes and POCs to validate architectural decisions
Highly Desirable
- Strong engineering background with hands‑on experience in software development or systems engineering, demonstrating technical credibility through active contribution
- Proficient in backend programming (Python, Java, C++)
- Platform engineering mindset: understanding platform‑as‑a‑product principles, developer experience design, self‑service capabilities that enable team autonomy at scale
- Proficient with observability frameworks (Prometheus, ElasticSearch, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) for metrics, logs and traces
- Experienced in data persistence across SQL (Postgres, MySQL), NoSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB) and TSDB (TimescaleDB, InfluxDB, Prometheus TSDB)
- Open source workflow engines (Temporal)
- Stream/batch processing (Flink, Spark)
- Test automation: Robot Framework and BDD
- BSS vendor platforms: Salesforce, Amdocs, Ciena
- BSS/OSS proficiency: deep understanding of Product Catalogue, CPQ, SOM, EPC and their interactions
- Telecom domain knowledge: understanding of WAN, overlay and security products
- Experience with major enterprise platforms (Salesforce, ServiceNow, Microsoft) and telco‑specific BSS vendors – can negotiate technical approaches and influence vendor roadmaps
- Cloud platforms (AWS or GCP)
- Telco transformation context: navigating regulatory requirements, billing accuracy, revenue assurance and operational continuity challenges
- Background in telco operations and BSS domains with understanding of technical and organisational challenges in transforming mission‑critical revenue‑impacting systems
- Product operating model experience: understanding how architecture enables rather than constrains product team autonomy and delivery velocity
