Payroll Client Manager£35,000-£40,000 + benefitsHybrid working

I'm working with a well-established accountancy firm that is looking to appoint a Payroll Client Manager into its growing payroll team.

This is a strong opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who enjoys client contact, technical payroll work and taking ownership of a varied multi-client portfolio.

The firm is looking for someone confident, organised and genuinely client-facing. This is not just a processing role in the background - you will act as a trusted point of contact for clients, manage payrolls end-to-end and advise on more complex payroll matters where needed.

The Role

  • As Payroll Client Manager, you will manage a portfolio of payroll clients, running payrolls from start to finish and ensuring everything is delivered accurately, on time and in line with compliance requirements.
  • You will also support new client onboarding, answer client queries, manage deadlines and advise on areas such as salary sacrifice, National Insurance categories, pensions and benefits in kind.
  • Responsibilities will include:
  • Running end-to-end payroll for a portfolio of clients
  • Processing starters, leavers, statutory payments and variable pay
  • Managing RTI submissions and HMRC reporting deadlines
  • Administering auto-enrolment and pension contributions
  • Working with schemes such as NEST, Smart Pension and People's Pension
  • Handling assessment, enrolment, opt-outs and re-enrolment cycles
  • Acting as the direct point of contact for client payroll queries
  • Managing client relationships and resolving payroll issues
  • Attending client calls or meetings where required
  • Scoping and onboarding new payroll clients
  • Liaising with clients and previous providers during payroll transitions
  • Advising on salary sacrifice, NI categories, benefits in kind and wider payroll legislation
  • Using workflow or practice management tools to track deadlines and deliverables

What They're Looking For

  • The firm is keen to speak with payroll professionals who are confident managing their own client portfolio and comfortable working autonomously.
  • 5+ years' payroll experience
  • Experience managing a multi-client payroll caseload, ideally within bureau or accountancy practice
  • Strong end-to-end payroll knowledge
  • Experience using BrightPay or similar multi-client payroll software
  • Good auto-enrolment and pension scheme experience
  • Strong understanding of salary sacrifice, National Insurance, benefits in kind and payroll legislation
  • Confidence dealing directly with clients
  • Strong organisation and deadline management skills
  • The ability to handle complex payroll queries independently
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using Karbon or similar workflow tools would be beneficial

Why Apply?

  • This is a great opportunity to step into a genuinely client-facing payroll role where you can take ownership, build trusted relationships and be valued for your technical knowledge.
  • The package includes:
  • £35,000-£40,000 + benefits
  • Hybrid working
  • Varied multi-client payroll portfolio
  • Hands-on client relationship management
  • Exposure to more technical payroll advisory work
  • Supportive and professional team environment
  • Opportunity to take real ownership of your caseload
  • This would suit an experienced Payroll Client Manager, Payroll Bureau Specialist or Senior Payroll Administrator who wants more autonomy, more client contact and a broader role within a well-run accountancy firm.
