A well-established and growing accountancy practice is looking to appoint an experienced Payroll Manager to lead and develop its payroll function. This is a senior opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who is looking for more than simply managing the day-to-day operation. The successful candidate will take responsibility for an established payroll service, leading a team of four and playing a key role in developing and growing the service line further. With around 300 payroll clients, there is a strong existing platform to build upon.

What you will be doing as a Payroll Manager:

  • Leading, managing and developing a team of four payroll professionals
  • Overseeing the delivery of payroll services across a diverse portfolio of approximately 300 clients
  • Maintaining high standards of accuracy, compliance and client service
  • Reviewing and overseeing payroll processes and ensuring deadlines are consistently met
  • Acting as a senior point of contact for clients, dealing with queries and providing payroll guidance where required
  • Supporting and developing the existing team, including performance management, coaching and mentoring
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processes, systems and efficiencies across the payroll function
  • Building strong relationships with existing clients and helping to develop the service further
  • Identifying opportunities to grow the payroll client base and increase fee income
  • Working closely with colleagues across the wider practice to identify opportunities for service development and cross-referral
  • Keeping up to date with changes in payroll legislation and ensuring the team operates in line with current requirements

What you will need to succeed as a Payroll Manager:

  • Significant experience within payroll, ideally gained within an accountancy practice or payroll bureau environment
  • Previous experience managing and developing a payroll team
  • Strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation and processes
  • Experience managing a sizeable portfolio of payroll clients
  • Relevant payroll qualifications, with CIPP or equivalent qualifications highly desirable
  • Excellent attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy
  • Strong communication and client relationship management skills
  • The confidence to identify and implement improvements to existing processes
  • A commercial mindset and an interest in developing and growing a payroll service
  • The ability to work autonomously while also working effectively with the wider practice
