THE OPPORTUNITY
We are recruiting an experienced Precision Pump Shaft Centre Lathe Turner for a well-established precision engineering business based in Liverpool. This is a specialist machining position within a dedicated pump-shaft manufacturing team. The successful candidate will manufacture precision shafts measuring up to approximately four metres in length from raw bar, forgings and a range of engineering materials. The role would suit a skilled conventional machinist who has strong centre-lathe experience and is comfortable producing long, high-precision components to demanding tolerances.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set and operate conventional centre lathes.
- Rough-turn and finish-turn precision pump shafts.
- Machine shafts measuring up to approximately four metres in length.
- Manufacture components from raw bar stock and forgings.
- Work with steel, stainless steel, alloy steel and specialist engineering materials.
- Read and interpret detailed engineering drawings.
- Plan machining sequences and select appropriate tooling.
- Set components using fixed and travelling steadies where required.
- Maintain dimensional accuracy throughout the machining process.
- Use micrometers, verniers and other precision measuring equipment.
- Complete in-process inspections and quality documentation.
- Identify machining issues and make suitable adjustments.
- Ensure finished parts meet dimensional, tolerance and surface-finish requirements.
- Follow ISO 9001 quality procedures and company safety standards.
- Work collaboratively with production, engineering and inspection teams.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- NVQ Level 3, recognised apprenticeship or equivalent engineering qualification.
- At least two years’ experience in a similar precision turning role.
- Strong experience operating conventional centre lathes.
- Previous experience using steadies when machining long components.
- Experience turning precision shafts measuring up to approximately four metres.
- Ability to work independently from detailed engineering drawings.
- Experience machining specialist metals and alloys.
- Excellent understanding of tolerances and precision measurement.
- Strong planning and organisational skills.
- Good communication skills.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Right to work in the UK and current UK residency.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
- Finish turning of multi-stage pump shafts.
- Manufacturing valve and pump components.
- Experience working with materials such as: Super duplex, Duplex, Inconel 718, X-750, Hastelloy, Monel.
- Experience within a subcontract machine shop.
- Experience supporting nuclear, defence, oil and gas, fluid-handling or power-generation customers.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and Microsoft 365.
