THE OPPORTUNITY

We are recruiting an experienced Precision Cylindrical Grinder on behalf of an established precision engineering and subcontract manufacturing business based in Liverpool. The company manufactures high-quality precision components for demanding industries, including nuclear, defence, oil and gas, fluid handling and power generation. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly skilled engineering team working on specialist, technically challenging components.

The successful candidate will be responsible for cylindrical grinding precision-engineered parts to tight tolerances while ensuring that all components meet the required drawing, dimensional and quality standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set and operate cylindrical grinding machines.
  • Grind precision components to tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Work accurately from detailed engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Select the correct grinding wheels, speeds, feeds and machining methods.
  • Carry out external cylindrical grinding and related precision finishing work.
  • Set up components securely using suitable workholding arrangements and steadies.
  • Measure completed components using appropriate precision measuring equipment.
  • Check dimensions, surface finishes and tolerances throughout the grinding process.
  • Identify and correct dimensional or surface-finish issues.
  • Complete in-process inspection and quality documentation.
  • Maintain grinding equipment and report any maintenance requirements.
  • Follow company quality, health and safety, and operational procedures.
  • Work closely with production, engineering and quality teams.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience working as a cylindrical grinder within a precision engineering environment.
  • Experience setting and operating cylindrical grinding machines.
  • Ability to work independently from engineering drawings.
  • Good understanding of tolerances, surface finishes and precision measurement.
  • Experience using micrometers, verniers, bore gauges and other inspection equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Good understanding of engineering materials and machining processes.
  • Ability to plan work and manage priorities effectively.
  • Right to work in the UK and current UK residency.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • NVQ Level 3, apprenticeship or equivalent engineering qualification.
  • Experience grinding long shafts, pump components or valve components.
  • Experience working with stainless steels, alloy steels and specialist materials.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality procedures.
  • Previous experience within a subcontract machine shop.
  • Experience supporting the nuclear, defence, oil and gas or power generation sectors.
