Job Specification: Creative Writing Assistant
Contract Type: Freelance (Ad-Hoc Basis)
Time Commitment: Approximately 2 – 4 hours per week (flexible)
Location: Remote, with occasional travel to London, Suffolk or Essex if not local.
Start Date: February 2025
Duration: Until manuscript completion (target publication Autumn 2025, with potential follow-ups in 2026 and 2027).
Key Responsibilities:
Feedback & Development: Offer constructive and thoughtful feedback on characters, plot, and dialogue to enhance the manuscript\’s emotional depth and authenticity. This will primarily take place through collaborative conversations, either in person or via phone. Think: soundboard, but with a human heart.
Reading & Note-Taking: Carefully review drafts and existing works to identify areas for improvement, highlight opportunities for deeper exploration, and extract relevant quotes for incorporation into the manuscript.
Creative Insight: Engage in meaningful and sensitive discussions about the manuscript’s key themes, offering ideas that contribute to the exploration of complex topics and their emotional resonance.
Requirements:
- A genuine interest in people, a love of fiction and a very, very good sense of humour!
- Ability to provide honest, constructive feedback in a collaborative and open-minded way.
- Comfort discussing sensitive topics without feeling obligated to share (though you’re welcome to if you wish). This would best suit somebody emotionally intelligent, witty and approachable – someone who loves talking, knows how to lean into good chemistry for all it\’s worth and doesn’t hold back.
- Based on true events, this project does require a certain degree of empathy and compassion. Therefore, I would be more than happy to discuss potential triggers upfront should it be required.
- Availability for approximately 3-4 hours per week, with flexibility to adjust as needed.
- If not local to the Essex / Suffolk border, then a willingness to travel to London during the later stages would be hugely appreciated.
- Rate: £20–£30 per hour (negotiable).
- And lastly, please, please, please: don’t be a fun-sponge! The subject matters might be on the heavier side here and there, but I don\’t want this to feel like work. I want it to feel like an outlet; an inspiring mid-week buzz; and hopefully, a lot of fun!
If this sounds like a project you’d enjoy, please feel free to drop me an email at tayloremilysf@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Edited to add: I am working my way through applications. The post only went online 24hrs ago, and already has over 100+ applicants. They are not closed, so please do not be discouraged by this, but please be aware that if I do not get back to you, it is not because I do not appreciate the thought and consideration put into every application. I absolutely do, and will do my best to acknowledge you all, but as I\’m sure you will all understand, time is in rather short supply!
