Private Farm near Stroud, Gloucestershire
We are searching for a proactive herdsperson to take full responsibility for the caretaking and husbandry of a commercial herd of Dexter cattle, in line with owners' requirements, supplemented by a secondary role carrying out routine maintenance around the grounds and farm.
Experience/Skills- Proven ability and experience on all aspects of cattle husbandry.
- Experience sufficient to deal with calving and know when issues need veterinary intervention.
- Full UK driving licence is essential – a tractor driving licence would be advantageous, but if not, then the willingness to undertake the training course.
- Basic cross-cutting chainsaw ticket, or sufficient ability and willingness to undertake the training.
- Taking pride in providing the best care possible to the herd, using low-stress management techniques.
- Willingness to adopt best-practice pasture management and to maintain the highest standards of hygiene, safety and tidiness throughout every aspect of the role.
- Caring for the family’s dogs when required.
- Grounds and farm maintenance.
- Being able and happy to work alone, but equally liaise easily and agreeably with contractors, neighbouring farmers and landowners when required.
- Ability to be flexible and work outside of standard hours due to the nature of the role. This is a 40+ hour a week role. Overtime will be paid for hours in excess of 40 hours. Hours are naturally longer in summer than in winter. Weekend work is required but there is backup personnel when needed.
- Cheerful and self-motivated with a positive “can do” attitude.
- Happy to follow instructions “to the letter” when required.
- Confident to make suggestions and put forward new ideas where appropriate.
- Mature, responsible and reliable.
- Good communication skills.
- Conscientious.
- Able to work unsupervised, using own initiative.
One bedroom cottage (with large boot room) provided as part of the employment package, as required for the role. All expenses and utilities for the cottage are included.
