Job Description: Part-Time Gardener / Caretaker

The role
\n
We need a skilled, experienced part-time gardener to take responsibility for a large, beautiful private garden and grounds near Leominster. It suits an enthusiastic, knowledgeable gardener who takes real pride in high standards and works well independently. The role comes with a self-contained two-bedroom Garden Cottage.
\n
\n
Terms
\n
• Hours: 3 days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), 8am to 4pm with a one-hour lunch (21 paid hours per week)
\n
• Pay: £18.50 per hour (approximately £20,000 per year)
\n
• Accommodation: Self-contained two-bedroom Garden Cottage at £200 pcm, linked to the employment. Terms will be set out in writing.
\n
• Holiday: : TBA - Paid holiday, pro rata for a three-day week. Paid Bank Holidays.
\n
• Start date: To be agreed
\n
• Probation: 3 months
\n
• Requirements: Satisfactory references and right to work in the UK
\n
\n
Main duties
\n
Garden and grounds
\n
• Mowing of main lawns and ride-on areas, strimming and edging
\n
• Borders: weeding, planting, cutting back and pruning
\n
• Hedge cutting
\n
• Vegetable garden: planting, growing and harvesting
\n
• Small greenhouse: tidying and potting
\n
• Watering
\n
• Driveway maintenance and weed control
\n
• Keeping the garden tidy and well presented throughout the year
\n
• Seasonal projects and improvements as agreed with the owner, within contracted hours
\n
Estate and property
\n
• Logging, log splitting and kindling preparation; bringing logs and kindling into the house
\n
• Light forestry work, limited to tasks you are certified and insured to carry out
\n
• Occasional fencing repairs and cattle grid maintenance
\n
• Routine maintenance of garden machinery
\n
• Clearing gutters
\n
• Moving garden furniture
\n
• General property maintenance and minor electrical tasks (for example bulbs and fuses). Anything more goes to a qualified electrician.
\n
• Putting bins out weekly
\n
Security
\n
• Monitoring cameras and the alarm, and reporting incidents
\n
Additional duties (occasional, by agreement)
\n
• Cleaning cars
\n
• Driving the owner, short and long distance, with advance notice, in a vehicle insured for the purpose
\n
• Dog sitting
\n
• Reasonable upkeep of the Garden Cottage
\n
\n
About you
\n
Essential
\n
• Proven professional gardening experience, including large gardens
\n
• Good plant and horticultural knowledge
\n
• Good knowledge of garden machinery (including ride-on mowers) and safe working practices
\n
• Excellent attention to detail and high standards
\n
• Reliable, self-motivated and able to use initiative
\n
• Comfortable around dogs
\n
• Full UK driving licence
\n
Desirable
\n
• PA1/PA6 spraying certificate (needed for any professional weed killing)
\n
• Chainsaw certification (NPTC/Lantra)
\n
• Experience of fencing and general estate maintenance
\n
\n
