Priory Hospital Middleton St George has an opportunity for a Mental Health Act Administrator to join our team. Set in spacious and relaxing grounds, Priory Hospital Middleton St George, located in Darlington, County Durham, is a specialist inpatient service for adults with mental health issues, complex needs and behaviours that challenge. We are dedicated to supporting people to transfer effortlessly between the most appropriate care, meeting individual needs, enabling recovery and re-engagement within the community, and maximising life opportunities.
We accept referrals from a wide variety of public sector organisations throughout the UK, including special hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, courts, low secure units (LSUs), medium secure units (MSUs), forensic lead commissioners, social services, NHS Mental Health Trusts, GPs, the police and others.

You’ll be part of a dedicated and compassionate team, all working together to ensure the smooth running of the hospital and to support the wellbeing of our patients. While your role doesn’t involve providing direct care, your contribution is vital in helping to maintain a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for everyone. Whether you're assisting with day-to-day operations, keeping things organised, or ensuring our spaces are well looked after, your support plays an important part in creating a positive experience for those who live and work here.
To manage the efficient administration of the Mental Health Act (MHA) within the area of responsibility and prioritise workload to meet constantly changing demands. To ensure compliance with the MHA 1983, amendments to the act and the revised MHA Code of Practice. This includes participating in, leading or responding to quality and clinical governance processes to ensure compliance such as audits, monitoring, reviews or investigations as required. To support and advise staff, service users and relatives on the MHA 1983 and associated procedures. Responsible for ensuring the effective creation and maintenance of legal files for service users subject to the Act, safeguarding confidential information and statutory documentation. This includes both electronic and paper-based files.
What you'll bring to the role
Essential for the role:
- Excellent administrative and organisational skills
- Good working knowledge of mental health services and mental health legislation
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply relevant legislation
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Competent in Microsoft Office
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise a changing workload
- GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English
- Ability to maintain accurate, confidential records and information
The following experience would be beneficial:
- Previous experience working in a healthcare or legal administrative environment
- Experience with Mental Health Act administration or related processes
- Experience supporting staff with legislative or statutory requirements
- Experience working with audits, governance, monitoring or compliance processes
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and associated Code of Practice
