Principal Education is seeking resilient and committed educators to work as Behaviour Mentors and Learning Support Assistants in SEMH schools, PRUs and alternative provision across Newham and the surrounding East London boroughs.
Many of the pupils in these settings have social, emotional and mental health needs, ADHD, autism or a history of disrupted education. They make progress when the adults around them stay consistent. That is the job.
The role
You will provide targeted support for pupils with significant behavioural, emotional and academic needs. This involves 1:1 and very small group work, both inside the classroom and in a mentoring capacity, working closely with teachers and pastoral teams.
These roles are full time (Monday to Friday) to give pupils the continuity they rely on. Starts available immediately and from October half term, long term, with several positions leading to permanent contracts.
What you MUST demonstrate
- Right to work in the UK
- Ability to support pupils with SEN and behavioural challenges
- Patience, empathy, composure and diligence
- Confidence to hold a boundary calmly, without raising your voice
- Flexibility and adaptability
- An enhanced DBS certificate registered with the Update Service, or willingness to complete a new application
- Overseas police clearance if you have lived abroad for 6+ months in the last 5 years
- Based in London or within a commutable distance
Please note: formal classroom experience is not essential. Backgrounds in youth work, residential and support work, sports coaching, mentoring, or a psychology, criminology or social sciences degree are all highly relevant to these roles.
Pay and benefits
- £105 to £130 per day, depending on experience
- Paid weekly
- Higher rates for ongoing roles, aligned with school pay scales
